BATS - Part 27
Unsure of legal recourse. We met with attorneys.
By now, we'd gathered tons of evidence that the sellers knew. Neighbor testimony, Facebook posts. It was clear.
But that didn't matter. This was an estate sale. No disclosure necessary, even if the heirs spent two years hiding things
My wife and I both bought each other the same cookbook as a gift. I have to recommend "The Fishwife Cookbook" and their tinned fish as a must-try. π£

In connection with everything going on, the 'bed and breakfast' idea suddenly took a bizarre twist. Things were about to get spooky.
BATS - Part 25
After getting my 3rd round of rabies shots, I went to the punk rock show. I couldn't drink though, because of the shots.
As I baked in the sun listening to Pennywise, I noticed someone sitting in front of me. His shirt...

Fun detour. After getting engaged, Mackenzie and I saw the eclipse (2017) with UW ESS where I worked. We went to the Warm Springs reservation. Kids in ceremony wore... BATMAN logos.
We drove south after on a trip. And found the Modoc caves. Where bats live...
Coincidence?

BATS - Part 23
Our bats, it turns out, likely spend winters in OR or CA, but spend summers in the PNW islands as a 'maternal roost' to raise pups.
Our inspection likely downplayed the severity intentionally, or the sellers actively hid damage behind the walls. But no bats were present in Feb

I had several other contractors and pest experts come to give an assessment.
Meanwhile, our efforts to negotiate an insurance payout ended in rejection. The bats were noted to be a 'pre-existing' condition. But they weren't there when we inspected the house.
THEY ARE MIGRATORY
BATS - Part 21
That's when the #RABIES fun began. For all of us.
4 visits per person. 7 Shots each. Even with insurance, our costs hit near $10K
Not fun. Also, when the nurse has to Youtube instructions, you know it's bad.
The worst was our infant's fever afterwards. Anger consumed me.

BATS - Part 19
While dropping the bats off at the health department, I see this beauty.
The Anchorage Inn, in Coupeville. A Victorian reproduction like our, I'm inspired. More than that, a deranged idea twisted into my skull.
Talking with the owners, a dark thought takes root.

BATS - Part 18
I catch some bats perched up in the crook of the chimney in the attic. Wearing gloves and using trash grabbers, I nabbed four of them and got them into a bucket.
They were Little Brown Bats or Yuma Myotis, as I would find later.

Fat Eddie the Silver Bat start off the night. Meets up with his girlfriend for a duet.
Yumas chirp angrily - I don't see them flying. They must be watching me. One buzzes my head near the septic.
An angry mama dear crashes through the brush and wheezes at me

BATS - Part 17
While figuring out how to find and catch a bat for the health department. I almost got jumped by this buck while taking out the trash.
Relevant to the story? No. But too silly NOT to share.
BATS - Part 16
I catch the bat with my fishing net, but it got crushed. Mackenzie packed up the car, and fled with Robby. We no longer felt safe.
Mackenzie lived with my sister. I stayed to work with the health department. We needed to test for rabies.

Okay - so its early July, 2023.
Our son is 7 months old. Napping.
We are making lunch.
A bat gets in. Middle of the day. Flying around.
It lands on the 'Addams Family' Chandelier, its chirps toying with us like laughter.

BATS - Part 14
With piles of poop building up in our gutters, our first bat expert showed up to help. From a national chain, he quoted us outlandish numbers, and told us:
"This is the worst residential infestation I've ever seen."
We were merose.

BATS - Part 13
Undeterred , our friends came to stay with us, and slept in the basement.
Unfortunately, this meant we swapped germs. We were all bed ridden and violently ill.

BATS - Post 10
Then, one fateful night. We figured it out. My Mother-in-Law saw something out the window. Running outside, we saw them, the bats, shooting out in waves. There were multiple hundreds. We lost count.
