For me, I like to do a sketch or storyboard-kinda thing just to vomit the idea when I have it. Then I continue it another day when I'm not feeling creative because I have already the idea

You may want to check the recipe and be methodical, but sometimes the recipe is just in your mind and you know how to mix and execute some of the steps without looking.
With the recipe is mostly easier and for most people it is too, but it's not always the case.
