🧐 What if metabolic defects are not just a consequence of inflammatory disease - but actively contribute to it?
Inflammation and metabolism are deeply intertwined, but the molecular links remain unclear.
Our new paper in Cell Death & Differentiation uncovers one. 🧵👇

The structure of BAY-3827 with wild-type AMPK α2 kinase domain by @zeqiraj.bsky.social & postdoc Mohd. Syed Ayengar helped determine the mechanism of action of this compound and the limitations for its use, addressing a long-standing challenge in the field: the absence of specific AMPK inhibitors.
Latest publication from the lab spearheaded by @shoreseashell.bsky.social & in collaboration with @zeqiraj.bsky.social is out. Using structural, biochemical & computational tools, this work sheds light on the mechanism of action of BAY-3827 in inhibiting #AMPK 1/3

Special day for our group @cbmr.science as we celebrate the successful defense of our (first) freshly minted PhD, Dr. Conchita Bringas 🥳 Her thesis was based on characterizing novel #AMPK inhibitors. Special thanks to the great committee @rbdamgaard.bsky.social ,Dave Carling & Lykke Sylow.
The surprising result for a GLP-1 pill (orforglipron) is the magnitude of weight loss in a Phase 3 trial of participants with Type 2 diabetes. For still unexplained reasons, people with diabetes lose much less weight on GLP-1 drugs than those with obesity, w/o diabetes.
Th most-cited research papers of all time. A 1951 publication by US biochemist Oliver Lowry in the Journal of Biological Chemistry describing an assay to determine the amount of protein in a solution has been cited more than 350,000 times.
Eli Lilly announced positive results from a large clinical trial of its once-daily pill orforglipron in people with type 2 diabetes, while Pfizer announced last week it was halting development of its candidate after signs of liver injury in a trial participant.

More than 2 decades ago the PINK1 protein was found to be linked to Parkinson's disease, but its structure and how it was activated was not known. Until @science.org today. A triumph for cryo-EM and structural biology, introducing new targets for drug intervention.

Science Advances’ special issue on women’s health highlights a growing wave of research focusing on women’s unique biological and psychological experiences. Articles cover a range of studies from the interplay between menopause and Alzheimer’s risk to the menstrual cycle’s influence on the brain-heart connection. It also describes the opportunities pregnancy provides to research aspects of both physical and mental health. By prioritizing women’s unique physiological and psychological experiences, research can expand the frontiers of knowledge in ways that benefit everyone.

Currently, NIH's Center for Scientific Review reviews 66,000 grant applications a year, with panels run by NIH’s separate institutes reviewing the rest.
Under a new plan, the institute-run panels will be eliminated, and many of the scientists overseeing them will be laid off. scim.ag/3QP0FUG
