The latest #aaba2026 meeting was the best yet! I have so many highlights, from the art expo and silent auction to the education committee workshop and course seeing the fascinating talks and posters. I’m so glad my 3D prints were so well received.

How we monitor internal coding agents for misalignment How OpenAI uses chain-of-thought monitoring to study misalignment in internal coding agents—analyzing real-world deployments to detect risks and strengthen AI safety safeguards.

ā€œWe also observed a case where a user created a loop that repeatedly called a model and asked for the time… Over many iterations, the model began to exhibit ā€œfed upā€ behavior and attempted to prompt-inject the system controlling the user role.ā€

Shockingly accurate.

I genuinely think the worst thing the internet did to reading was convince people that finishing books is a competitive sport. You don't need to read 52 books a year. You just need to read. Books you like. At your own pace. And think about them for longer than a TikTok video.

It’s crazy how the only thing that fixes problems with the brain is Puzzles. Vestibular therapy? Puzzles. Vision therapy? Puzzles. Cognitive rehabilitation? Puzzles. Feels kind of like a joke solution but ok

Chairing a conference is basically a flex of soft skills, what with writing soliciting emails, fitting a budget, and enforcing deadlines.

No wonder scientists hate it.

A graph with a set of concentric circles. The outermost is "AI" (artificial intelligence" and has under it "umbrella term but also used in basic AI applications such as "robot programming", "search algorithms", "boolean logic", "other applications".

Next is "ML", machine learning. "AI subset: anomaly detection as in fraud prevention", "predictive analytics as in forecasting".

Next is "DL", deep learning: "image recognition", "speech to text", "identify molecular structure in drug research".

And last is LLM, Large Language Models, "ChatGPT, BERT, T5", "trained on enormous datasets"

I remember, even within the introduction to AI course I audited in grad school in 2015, I remember the inclusion of some graph like this.

The thing which is maybe surprising in my reread is how quickly it seems like researchers within these field are willing to accept the redefinition in scoping.

Disney's embarrassing AI-generated Star Wars video of scrambled-up animals was the opening salvo in a year full of AI humiliation 2025 was the year of creative bankruptcy.

ā€œInstead of showing its potential, generative AI just demonstrated how out of touch a major media force had become.ā€ www.pcgamer.com/software/ai/...

The hero's journey circle but it says THE FOOL'S ERRAND and the guy on the top has a little jester's hat. Stages are

Opportunity to gain
Supernatural prank
Unheeded Advice
Slip 'n' fall (intensification of error)
Helper (who always lies)
Old man (mistaken for wise)
Helper (who also always lies)
Hall of mirrors (confrontation with the self
Stumbling through the thorns
The Unforgivable misunderstanding
Rejection of the goddess
Coming home before he's supposed to

Only Valve can get away with casually dropping news of new hardware on a random day of the week out of the blue. A new VR headset from Valve. Steam Frame is here and it’s real.

Your first look at the all-new Affinity YouTube video by Affinity

Hmmm. Watching the Affinity big "True Creative Freedom" reveal video. I've long recommended the Affinity tools as solid alts to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator (ipad apps in particular are great).

Basically, it's all rolled into 1 app. Now free, but with deep integration with Canva (for AI).
