And there’s essentially no way to say I’d like to opt out of the more toxic forms of male gaze romance as a reader, but for female gaze romance in scifi and fantasy, it’s usually labeled.

True enough. I think for me, I wish there was more of a space for male gaze romance to be acknowledged as a different type of romance. I see again and again in fantasy and scifi, that there will be a lot of romance written by men and not labeled as romance, but will if it’s written by women.

The only romances I can get behind in Lord of the Rings are Merry and Pippin, and Sméagol and his ring. Those are the ride and die relationships there.

I’m very on board with Eowyn not ending up with Aragorn. She begged him to not leave her behind and he ignored her, so she had to escape and travel solo. And he only wants the person who has to give up her immortality for him. Ditch him!

Also, for the record, accepting that someone you love doesn’t love you back is a romantic notion. Accepting someone you don’t love is not.

And yeah, where’s your statement about how much Eowyn loved him back? It’s not there. That’s why she settled. You’re so focused on how great Faramir is here, but Eowyn is his prize. She doesn’t love him, she accepts him.

This is definitely a pet peeve of mine. I understand that romance is very personal, but the way folks will go out of their way to bash it is unreasonable.

I don’t know. It just sort of seemed like she was settling and that he whined enough at her in the book that she eventually caved.
