Great to speak at the London SAS Conference with Specialty, Associate Specialist and Specialist doctors from across London.
SAS doctors are the backbone of the NHS, delivering expert care every day, often without the recognition they deserve.
Thank you for all you do.

Happy #WorldHealthDay 🩺
In the spirit of this year's theme, 'Together in Science', we examine an unusual chapter in the history of anaesthesia, where early misuse and experimentation with new substances helped spark discoveries that shaped modern medicine. 🧵 (1/5)

In anaesthesia, we know that delivering safe, effective care can come with unavoidable waste, from single-use equipment to packaging and pharmaceuticals. 🧵 (1/4)

It must take active steps to close those gaps, to give the NHS and the patients it serves, additional staff and facilities that are so clearly needed.

It is our view that for future plans to be fit for purpose, governments must look at staffing, beds, & equipment – and how levels can be improved – right now. Given the lead in time to train intensivists & anaesthetists, these plans cannot be created and left in a drawer for the next pandemic (3/5)
The report acknowledges several vital truths about the state of hospitals that we made forcefully to the Chair, Baroness Hallett, during our role as core participants in the Inquiry. (2/5)
The action & preparation must start immediately. If not, any plans will be meaningless & leave UK nations no better prepared than they were in 2020. As a first step, governments must quantify current staffing & other existing deficits that both anaesthesia & intensive care are currently facing (4/5)
“We coped, but only just.” This is the key message of the UK Covid-19 Inquiry which released its report into the impact of the pandemic on healthcare systems earlier today. As anaesthetists and intensivists, our members know this first-hand. (thread)(1/5)
We are dismayed by findings in this year’s NHS Staff Survey that show discrimination, racism, unwanted sexual behaviour & violence continue to affect patients and staff.
We reiterate our call that more needs to be done to make the NHS a safer and more just environment 👉️ buff.ly/U0UfwY3
This #WorldSleepDay, we recognise that anaesthetists and resident doctors often work long hours, night shifts and irregular schedules, which can make getting restorative sleep especially difficult.
That's why we offer resources to help you combat fatigue.

Useful Tips to Aid Sleep The absence of light stimulates melatonin release. Try an eye mask and blackout blinds or curtains! Avoid using electronic devices for 30-60 min before bed. Have a hot bath. The drop in temperature the body undergoes after a hot bath or shower helps the onset of sleep. Write a 'to do' list rather than inevitably thinking of one as you try to sleep.
Shift work, on-call duties, and long days can affect your circadian rhythm and restorative sleep. In the lead up to #WorldSleepDay, Practitioner Health will be sharing a variety of resources that can help you to improve your sleep health! @assocanaes.bsky.social
🎉 It's International Women’s Day!
To mark the occasion, we spoke with three inspiring doctors about the women who have influenced, mentored, and supported them throughout their careers in anaesthesia.
#IWD2026 #ForAllWomenAndGirls
👩⚕️Ahead of International Women’s Day, we’ve published a new brief on women in anaesthesia.
Our specialty has a diverse workforce, with a growing number of women working in anaesthesia. Yet disparities in recruitment, career progression, and workplace safety remain.
