As well as the joy for residents of M+KH to finally have rail travel to town, there’s much excitement here in B30 too- to have a direct public transport route to Moseley - and one that’s faster than by road. My daughter has already taken that trip twice with another offer to be taken on Sat! 2/2

It’s so uplifting to see so many people enjoying and sharing pics of their first trips on the very long-awaited reopening of the Camp Hill Line.
In fact, so fed up of waiting, this Moseleyite emigrated to Selly Oak 24 years ago, and has remained on the cross city line ever since! 1/2
I’ve only just got around to saying this but I’ve never been so moved by a performance before until this Wednesday; an absolutely incredible depiction of the Stations of the Cross and Easter Story by 300 young people from the @rcbirmingham.bsky.social
Great news!
Govt to issue new guidance to councils to design safer streets for women & girls after polling shows 9 in 10 feel unsafe walking at night. Plans include better lighting, visibility, and safer routes - shifting responsibility from individuals to street design

Week two of the Claudia Winkleman show is an absolute banger of a chat show.
Agree there was a real awkwardness to the first one (not quite as bad as @theguardian.com review) but this was superb. Not keen on the US style music/ set vibe but if it continues in tonight’s vein, this’ll be a winner.
Or much-needed parks for people instead of for cars- for all the new residents in our city centres

Air pollution is a health crisis: ~900 premature deaths in Birmingham each year, and thousands of children hospitalised.
The World Health Organization says no level of air pollution is safe, and 1 in 11 UK children have asthma.

In Brum, daily vehicles are up nearly 9,000 since 2022.
More cars = more danger, more pollution at child height, fewer kids walking or cycling.
If we care about children’s health, it’s time to introduce a congestion charge - and cut traffic, not just emissions.

Love this positive news report from @drdavidgk.bsky.social on how seaweed is being turned into real alternatives to single‑use plastics 💚

At about the half way point, I realised I should have tried this out first before signing up for the competition… but by the end of my first full run through of #hyrox I actually felt quite excited about it! This is going to be tough though!
My West Mids #activetravel day:

I mean, there aren’t really any more important issues to address at the moment though
“Over 40k people die in car crashes in the US every year. Entire neighborhoods are carved up by high-speed traffic. Kids can’t walk to school safely. But don’t worry – someone saw a teenager run a stop sign on an e-bike, so the real crisis must be those darn batteries on two wheels.”
I sometimes wonder what my 14 year old is up to in the park…my heart was warmed that he is still playing 😊
Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Gaza.
Aww, wish I had been there! Especially as it was in my city- I cd have cycled there 🚴🏻♀️
Single phrase for what I am actively doing for children’s freedom and independence?

The joy of cycling!

I’m sure you’ll
approve of the fact I cycled in too! Poor that trains don’t run early enough though, esp as bus routes v affected from B30 due to course closures.
Uplifting day for celebrating the city without cars…
#Birmingham Great Run taking over the city centre this morning and street play session with the neighbours this afternoon- perfect!
That ride with @alcarns.bsky.social looked like this.
Thank you to Al for making time to meet local residents concerned about tackling road danger and making it easier to get around the Selly Oak constituency and the wider city, including several from @betterstreetsforbirmingham.org.

I’m talking school systems not individuals or academic expectations. I agree that both teaching and academic levels are much higher but the latter is the problem esp given the pandemic-so much pressure on grades that teachers adhere to systems that are inherently poor for long term well being.
Absolutely agree that most teachers are doing their best, but the other bit? No way… as a mum of 3, things are not vastly better- they just have more people employed to pick up the pieces of a flawed and old fashioned system that is inherently breaking our children.
Shut down the youth clubs.
Sell off the playing fields.
Put up "no ball games" signs.
Make public places hostile to teenagers.
Then:
"Young people, eh? Always indoors looking at their phones."
I’ve always leant into action-focussed change rather than waiting for politicians, but hate to say that here in Brum, never before have we needed political change more than now.
Worried from what dark corners that cd emerge, how about a ‘Better B’ham- streets, homes, health and childhoods’ party?
After 25 years of the fantastic Newhampton Arts Centre, what a privilege it was to present at the launch of the centre’s rebrand as Wolverhampton Arts Centre, and launch this critically important capital redevelopment project @newhamptonarts.bsky.social
Thanks @shivajishivalaw.bsky.social for this detailed commentary on the event tonight that I sadly couldn’t make. Let’s hope some of the visions of the panellists can be realised.

An amazing city to live in.
We are NOT our failing council.
We are NOT what the national media loves to portray us as.
We ARE inclusive, friendly, diverse, disarmingly not up ourselves’, and a beautiful place for those that see beyond the superficial.
Let’s spread #postivelybirmingham
