National temperature neutrality, agricultural methane and climate policy: reinforcing inequality in the global food system | Colm Duffy 📣 This morning we have a 🗞️ new paper (reply to comment) out in Environmental Research Letters: It highlights a simple but important problem with “temperature neutrality” (TN) as a national climate t...

We published a reply to comment on our recent Temperature Neutrality Paper.

The (very) short version:

If everyone does it, the very assumptions that underpin it are invalidated.

You can agree with issues around cost of living, that does not mean you need to agree with the protest action.

Blocking critical care, increasing risk to vulnerable people, that is not right.

I will never support denying others their rights.

Not now, not ever.

🗞️ ✨ New paper, led by Tara Kenny, examines the Dublin Declaration (DD).

We find many authors of the DD are connected via livestock industry networks, largely from high-income countries, with notable levels of self-citation across the literature.

Video contradicts Trump’s claim man killed in Minneapolis was a ‘gunman’ Video evidence reviewed by Guardian shows Alex Pretti, killed by agents in Minneapolis, held a phone, not a gun

This is absolutely terrifying.

Execution of protesters is not acceptable.

It is not law enforcement.

And the repeated lies by those in power are only meant to cause confusion and delegitimise what your eyes are telling you.

Alarm for possible €28bn climate fine as Ireland falls way short on greenhouse gas targets The government had committed to reducing the emissions by 51 per cent between 2018 and 2030, which it is now not on track to achieve.

This has been flagged for some time now ... In fact, the comprehensive report by the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council last March was entitled "a colossal missed opportunity" for crying out loud!

Obviously there are climate deniers out there, and I am following a number of COP30 posts on LinkedIn.

Maybe I shouldn't be, but I can't help but be surprised at the sheer volume of climate denial on there.

A Global Food System Worth Fighting For. The multifaceted pressures on our food systems are growing, but our willingness to face them is not.

Our global food system alone would push us past 1.5, even if we eliminated fossil fuels tomorrow.

We agree to targets, miss them, but we need the resources to meet the targets, so you can't fine us!

In their Letter to the Editor published in the Irish Times @irishtimes.com, the scientists set the record straight by rebutting multiple errors in John FitzGerald's opinion piece last week:
"Framing the debate as a false dichotomy...distracts from the real choices"

Our response to Prof FitzGerald calls for scientific rigour, ambition, transparency and a good-faith public debate on the real choices facing Irish society.

I am not sure what you are talking about.

He is either using it as an example or the issue he is highlighting or he is not.

If he is, he is having a dig at it.

I am sure he doesn't specifically care one way or another about bats. But, that is the point. Nature v "progress".

5 months ago 2 0 1 0

The point is that he trivializes environmental regulation and uses a single "horseshoe bat" as an example of an environmental consideration that should not have been considered.

It is a dig at regulation, and it specifically singles out the horseshoe bat case, so yes, it is a dig there too.

Ireland urged not to follow New Zealand in changing methane targets New Zealand’s government to rewrite its climate law and row back on emissions commitments

New Zealand’s adoption of a “no additional warming” methane target marks a turning point, but not a good one.

It dilutes global effort when ambition must rise.

As a PhD student at University of Galway, Catherine Connolly lent her support to our Fossil Free campaign.

In 2019, she gave me a reference that I am still grateful for

On Oct 24th, I’ll be voting for the candidate who shows empathy, kindness, and a people-focused sense of justice.
