also don't ask me to recite my phone number like 12-34-56-78. It has to be 123-45-678 else I forget the numbers 😭

Prepositions in Norwegian are hard bcs prepositions, but I also seem to really struggle with the equivalents of expressions like English "however", "nevertheless", "furthermore", "despite", "in contrast to" etc. -- I can't ever remembers what the words for them are #linguistics

One good thing about non-academic job application processes is they reject you fast

Share Your Story: Impacts of the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) Following the release of the President's Budget Request (PBR) on April 3rd, NSF quickly and quietly took steps to begin to dismantle the SBE Directorate. The Federation of Associations in the Behavioral and Brain Sciences (FABBS) wants to hear about how the SBE Directorate at NSF has supported your research and career. Your stories help FABBS communicate to policymakers and the public what’s at stake when the federal government fails to fund critical sciences. We may follow up for clarification, but we will not share your name or institution publicly without your permission.

🚨 NSF is already quietly eliminating the SBE Directorate, despite Congress’ mandate that NSF support the behavioral & social sciences.

Steps to counter this are in motion.

If you
- have an SBE proposal under review
- serve on an SBE grant panel

📦 My first #RStats package on CRAN:

{readelan}

A package dedicated to reading all files associated with ELAN: eaf, etf, ecv. Reads annotations, metadata, controlled vocabularies. Relevant for many in #linguistics perhaps?

Hey if you need something to do over this long weekend, have a go at my PhD student Anna-Merete’s survey. It’s sentences to rate, you just need to have any English variety as your first language, and it’ll take you 10–15 minutes. #linguistics

The mantra that AI is "just maths" not only ignores the materiality (humans have to mine rare earth minerals) but also the political & human harms like fascism and indentured labour.

The idea that AI is detached ideas — and not stolen data & labour that runs on colonial lines — is harmful itself.

hey guys why does my brain work best if I get semi-dressed up, buy a coffee, invariably choose a wobbly table, and get periodically distracted by small babies, doggies, and random people?

Thank you! We're excited to work with some students here too!

For what it's worth, I won't even use it for research. Seeing shit with my own human eyes and understanding how it fits together is the only thing I'm good at??

Low key humanities-ish fields should stop falling over themselves trying to be “scientific“ 🙄

My very limited impression is that some parts of language studies are not interested in this kind of work. I‘m wondering where this kind of work goes. Philosophy of science? Sociology of knowledge? Idk

Does anyone have any impressions about how common it is for academic journals to publish articles that sort of examine the field itself? I don’t mean reviews here. #linguistics #AcademicSky

Yeah, I think so too! -- I think this kind of thing probably happens a lot in science and I bet someone has written about it

I'm thinking of something like using school cohorts to understand sign language development because of the observation that younger students behave differently from older ones, and then later on the motivation for other studies is something like, this is how it's done in our field

Is there a name for when a method that was originally linked to natural phenomenon takes on a life of its own in the history of disciplines? Specifically that the motivation for using is that it's been used elsewhere?
