‘Am giving a talk tomorrow on “Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: From Science to Trout” in Plymouth, NH!

Thank you to Senators Shaheen and Hassan in defending long-term ecological research at our NH Experimental Forests. You can't study forests in a test tube in a day, and these landscape-scale outdoor laboratories are critical for understanding our nation's forests, now and for generations to come!
Is there anything more majestic than a redwood?
Ice is breaking up in Maine! Time to think about smelt runs!
With two exceptions, EFRs seem to fall in the “under evaluation” category. And for at least one, Bartlett EFR in NH, it appears they will
close the onsite facilities but not the Forest to research. However, this results in lost efficiencies, opportunities and safety.
Grand Bahama-a forgotten island that will never forget!
bahama bonefishing! Endless water; infinite possibilities!
I had the honor of speaking at the recent New England Society of American Foresters Meeting in a session highlighting the USDA Forest Service's Experimental Forests and Ranges of the Northeast—Hubbard Brook, Bartlett, Penobscot, and Massabesic—alongside two outstanding women scientists!
Son-in-law landing a beautiful bone fish off the northeast side of Grand Bahama. He has a longer cast and better eye than me, and always that element of chance to run into a school of these gray ghosts of the flats!
Instilling the love of the sea for the next generation!
Tailing bonefish….

What do you see in this video? Look close!
Lots of spotting; not much catchin! But very cool to see bonefish gliding on and off the flats as the tides turn, and today, tailing in the shallows. I am very satisfied to simply find them/see them in their natural habitat! At least one part of our world is ok…

Bonefish are ghosts of the flats. And one tough fish to catch! By the time you spot them, judge their speed and direction, and cast towards them into the relentless wind - they are usually long gone!

Slice of paradise - will go #bonefish hunting on the rising tide this afternoon!
Full moon rising as I trace my steps back to civilization!
A quick ski in to check on a famous fishing pool in Rangeley, ME: Steep Bank Pool. Glad that they have protected this important part of the fishery!

And the first xc ski of the year!
Lakes are frozen and geese are headed out in search of open water. Almost time for ice fishing!
What’s better than a child in nature?
Love a good “tip up” and getting to explore the intricacies of a spruce root system!
Here is some likely habitat! Will come back with a flyrod next spring!
Exploring a hidden gem of a trail on the coast of Maine at Edgar M Tennis Preserve on Deere Isle. Looking for habitat for “salters”, or anadromous brook trout that spend part of their life cycle in brackish water and part in fresh water streams that run into the oceans.
‘Love the feeling of the Big Stretch as you edge your fish to the surface. Beats going to the gym!
In fact, nothing better for brain and body than a day on the river!

Fishing the Weber was amazing! I highly recommend it!
I love November fishing: water is low, cold and super clear, and you can actually sight fish. I am almost as happy to just walk the stream and watch the fish - almost!
