The gems always busy with dangerous work, Greg disregarded and distanced by the gems, Rose being dead and also a symbol of what Steven feels he's constantly under pressure to live up to, everyone hesitant to open up with each other about their own emotions until it bursts out

It's been a while since I've seen the show but from what I remember, Steven was just unfortunately born into a situation that felt kinda impossible to not leave without some sort of severe emotional damage.

I still think it feels messed up to blame the 12 year old kid who was born into a family that he perceives as doing important, world-saving work that he feels obligated to help with because of the nature of his birth and his perceptions of who his mother was. I dunno, I guess it doesn't matter

I think I'd agree with this more if Steven Universe wasn't 12 years old in Season 1. Ultimately he was a child, he had no concept of the gravity of it and no school.
