Autistic doctors transitioning into practice:

My autistic meltdown: the impact of autistic sensory needs As an autistic adult, even the word meltdown is humiliating. A shameful part of my past, no longer relevant to a senior doctor, or so I would like to think. And yet the reality is different. Some 2 ye...

Epistemic injustice... being autistic means one’s credibility and capacity to relate an accurate account of one’s own experience is often questioned. How can I be a doctor if I am autistic? Conversely, how can I be autistic if I am a doctor?

I wish it was socially acceptable to just use tin foil and people started making tin foil with Christmas patterns. Imagine- just scrunch and done! I tell everyone you’re not allowed to comment on my wrapping (until tin foil becomes common practice) as a reasonable adjustment for dyspraxia.

That’s a good idea- you could also try 111 emergency prescriptions

Oh no, I’m so sorry!!! I really hope it goes better for you this time

I also withdrew from venlafaxine over Christmas- it was not pleasant. The only thing that I found helped a little was cutting out caffeine

Ah yes because If I wanted to create a group who would be most likely to be sexual predators I’d make sure to give them hyper-empathy, a strong sense of social justice, and a hatred for social hierarchies. Please can we stop scapegoating communities that are far more likely to be victims 🤦‍♀️

There are so many issues, but I’ll leave you with this: It is false and dangerous to claim activism separates the community into deserving and undeserving when ND activists fight precisely against those divisions. This narrative isn’t just reductive—it harms the very people it claims to protect.

I’m not sure I would recommend it though it’s very slow when it comes to the actual writing but it works well for my brain and gives me time to really think things over. I massively enjoy planning and researching so I try and spend as much time as possible doing those things before I start writing.

I’m a one draft and done kind of person. I agonise over every single word until the sentence is exactly how I want it to be and plan and research very very thoroughly so I very rarely edit much because I spend so long thinking about each word as I’m writing it.

This was a really interesting read and a very important paper. That being said could you possibly slow down with the papers you’re publishing? I’m struggling to keep up and my to read folder is very full. (I am joking. What would I do with my life if people stopped publishing autism research?)

If their argument is that it makes customers feel icky, it actually only benefits a certain type of customer to maintain this sort of ‘professionalism’. So much of the problematic stuff in some definitions of ‘professionalism’ is defined through a straight, white, cis, non-disabled, male gaze.

"Letting customers know that you are autistic is unprofessional".
Not the first time I've heard that (paraphrased and bizarre) attitude.
What's 'unprofessional' is prejudice against marginalised groups, minorities, disabled and neurodivergent people.

I thought I’d come up with it, but I must have seen an excerpt from your book. This narrative is invalidating and I think sometimes this narrative stops us from thinking could this person actually be autistic or could there be something else that might explain, for example, executive dysfunction.

A 50 year old man has nausea and heartburn. Would you say he was a little bit pregnant? Of course not, the fetus in the uterus makes the pregnancy. Being autistic isn’t about traits, it’s about the brain and the neurotype as a whole. Without an autistic brain and neurotype you are not autistic.

This is such a cool idea! I’m pretty sure music was my first special interest. It lights up every nerve in my body like a Christmas tree. It’s my main sensory seeking activity and it means so much to me- I think because I’m autistic. Honestly that’s such a cool PhD!

I don’t know how you articulated your criticism in such a clear way. I just read the article and all I can do is make general disapproving noises with enough steam coming out of my ears to power a small train.
