On the last day of long weekend in the east, we also managed to visit this most incredible museum in Maldon. A military history nerds heaven, especially if into weapons, they have the Donnington Firearms Collection. We had a really informative and long chat with the curator Julie Anne Miller.

WORLD-FIRST: Ground-breaking research published today in the Ornithologist Journal has, for the first time, translated common UK bird vocalisations into equivalent phrases in the human language.

The results tell us a lot!

Ten Rules for Aspiring Poets

1. Poetry does not have to rhyme.
Well, at least not all the time always.

2. Metaphors can lend a poem power
     (but mixing them isn’t good).
Should they start to fly in all directions,
      nip them in the bud.

3. Focus and concentration
     are important skills to hone.
Close the door. Turn off the wi-fi.
Don’t get distracted by your ph

4. Avoid clichés like the plague.

5. Don’t write stuff that’s a bit vague.

6. The use of unnecessarily long words
     may result in reader alienation.
     Curb your sesquipedalianism
     to obviate any obfuscation.

7. Always proof-read you’re work.
Accuracy can be it’s own reward!
     And remember that the penis
     mightier than the sword.

8. Check haiku closely
for lines which have too few
     or too many syllables.

9. Never ever follow rules.

As a good suggestion from @deevybee.bsky.social I have decided to post my infamous liquorice thread from X a few years ago to here. This is valuable knowledge if you or anyone you know has high blood pressure and likes a bit of liquorice. The stuff might kill you.

World Service must be fully state-funded to counter disinformation, say BBC bosses Ministers must cover full costs of championing western values abroad, senior BBC figures to argue

NEW: BBC bosses will make push for government to take back costs of the World Service, amid an “aggressive” Russian state disinformation drive

Now “undeniable” case for using world service to push western values, they say. State media moves in when WS moves out.

Today is Young Carers Action Day. This year I've travelled across the country meeting young carers and hearing their stories.

Their resilience and strength always amaze me. Young carers deserve more support – we’re fighting hard every day to make sure they get it.
