Floata was more than a restaurant, it was a place where working class families like mine went to spend time together. “At seven in the morning, I don’t want to eat dim sum, but I’m scarfing down my har gow and siu mai, because it was our family time together,” said Seto, a local writer and artist.

Before the Taste of China Seafood Restaurant began dishing out mouth watering plates of eggplant tofu, chow mein, and clams in black bean sauce, 338 Spadina Avenue in Toronto was home to the United Bakers Dairy Restaurant, a Jewish eatery serving food with E. European roots. #torontochinatown
Guess who is a #1 Bestseller along with the PM?! Perhaps this is a sign we should swap ideas, esp about infrastructure.

It’s all about the East Van upbringing! Time for a rematch though @ayan604.bsky.social!
Too many books? I think what you mean is not enough bookshelves.
Thanks @ayan604.bsky.social! And thanks VPL for giving us the space to talk about growing up in East Van! You can now watch our conversation about the secrets of East Van kids (maybe that should be my next book)… we spill the beans on highschool, racism, class, work…
Wing’s Noodles is a staple in Montreal’s #Chinatown and known for manufacturing products like cookies, noodles and wonton wrappers. It started in 1897 as an import/export business known as Wing Lung & evolved into manufacturing Chinese food products with bilingual messages in the late 1960s.
Here at downtown Vancouver library on sunny day with a full house to hear author and artist Donna Seto speak on her tremendous new book on Chinatown Vancouver. Her writing is excellent, her illustrations superb & just a fascinating conversation on the importance of place for children and legacies.
I wish conversation between Donna Seto & Andy Yan was being recorded. There is a fullness and honesty about the immigrant experience & biases.Donna also has a doctorate in political science. At the Vancouver Public library talking about the new illustrated book by Donna called “Chinatown Vancouver”
Oh, I think it is recorded and will be part of VPL public resources. Part of the benefits of the library! Andy was talking about organizing an event at SFU perhaps. @ayan604.bsky.social
Thanks Amanda for this awesome sketch of me and Andy talking at the VPL!
A great honour to be sketched by @amandawtwong.bsky.social with @donnaseto.bsky.social at the "Chinatown Vancouver" book talk
It was an absolutely super talk,I really enjoyed the reading from your new book. I will never look at balloons the same. Your talk & your book show that Chinatown is not merely a past collection of wonderful buildings but a cultural touchstone of tremendous importance. Thank you for this great work.
Thanks Sandy! Thanks for attending and I’m glad my balloon story resonated with you. 🎈
Me and Donna Seto holding her book

Yay!! 😀
It was such a pleasure to talk to Joseph Planta from The Commentary! We had a good laugh about the nostalgia of Chinatown that only East Van kids of our generation would get… like it was cemented in time! Have a listen. #chinatownyvr @joeplanta.bsky.social
