A chocobo is a large flightless bird creature from the game series, Final Fantasy. I personally remember them best from Final Fantasy Seven, especially having played through numerous rounds of the mini-racing game. This tattoo features a classic yellow chocobo with another smaller creature, called a “Moogle”, riding on its back. Moogles are little and while they can fly, they move slow. The poor little guy is holding into the reigns while the chocobo speeds forth, eager to win the race.

Behold a newschool raccoon tattoo, with playful proportions and filled with cottage-core colors and textures. Orange capped mushrooms, blueberry clusters and oak leaves break up the design and introduce more flow. This tattoo was completed in my third year of tattooing, and it is now my seventh year. I am still proud of it and impressed by how well the gray colors in the raccoon’s coat healed. The subject is my client’s pet raccoon and she spent much of the session chatting about this mischievous little punk and his addiction to sugar.

This narrow, vertical painting is small and depicts a glass canning jar floating open with the lid drifting away. Inside the jar fireflies surge to escape and swarm in the air, among a thicket of honeysuckle flowers. The serene teals remind me of summer in the south, chasing fire flies in the Ouachita Valley. I still remember what honeysuckles taste like, and I think about it when I’m sad.

This newschool-style tattoo features a dark purple xenomorph alien crouched around an ice cream cone stuffed with pink alien eggs. Bright green ooze dribbles from the waffle cone’s brim and emits a lime colored haze that drifts through the background. Near the bottom of the cone a crack opens up to reveal more eggs. The alien creature wraps her tail protectively around the precious, sweet bundle and shows her teeth. Mashing together whimsy and horror, this tattoo plays with our expectations of the term “treats”.

A bright, colorful new-school-style tattoo of the Final Fantasy character, ViVi. He shuffles through a purple background holding a Chocobo egg and his staff. ViVi is looking up at the top of his staff where a baby chocobo has landed, looking happily down at him. ViVi is an interesting character because he is a powerful mage with the capacity for great destruction, and yet he only desires a simple life of helping other creatures around him. His story is a message of hope that we are more than what we’ve been created to do, and that happiness is a more worthwhile pursuit than the endless thirst for power.
