In this setup, the physical world becomes part of the storyline, where actions in the virtual universe have visible effects on the real world, deepening the immersion.
8/ The game becomes a bridge between reality and virtuality. In XR the virtual world can invade our reality, creating a tension where actions in the game world have real-world consequences.
7/ Imagine the game as an extension of you. The virtual world isn't just a playground for a pre-written character, it's a space where your real self—your experiences, choices, and emotions—become part of the narrative. Your identity isn’t just input data; it shapes the world you play in.
6/ And that’s where I introduce a concept I call the self role-playing game. In this type of game, you’re not playing a scripted character; you’re playing as yourself. Your choices, your environment, and even your identity become central to the story.
5/ These narratives don’t just challenge the definition of reality—they push us to consider: what makes something (or someone) real? Is it physical presence, or is it behavior, connection, and agency? This is the kind of question XR games could explore.
4/ Digimon dives into the idea of digital beings growing sentience, and our emotional connection to them. It raises a fundamental question: Can something digital, something created by code, be considered alive? Does the perception of life lie in interaction, or in consciousness?
3/ Another example is Digimon. Here, digital creatures exist as both companions and living entities in a virtual ecosystem, deeply tied to the real world. These stories ask: what happens when virtual entities become so lifelike that we perceive them as real, even alive?
2/ Let’s take a step back. Many stories in media have already explored the intersection between real and virtual worlds. Take "Serial Experiments Lain", where Lain navigates both her physical existence and her presence in the “Wired.” The boundaries blur as both worlds shape her identity.
1/ Traditional XR games often follow a familiar formula: embodying a fictional hero in an imagined world. But what if we flipped this idea? Imagine a game where you are the protagonist—where the story isn’t separate from your life, but integrates your identity and reality.
