Pearson: Volunteers let governments off the hook The more social agencies do, the less governments are inclined to fill in the gaps in our social safety net

Excellent column this weekend by @glenpearson.bsky.social who threads the needle well by identifying both the importance of #volunteerism, but also how it serves as a bandaid to failed #onpoli & #cdnpoli, especially when it comes to #poverty & #foodinsecurity. #ldnont - lfpress.com/opinion/colu...

Of sap… since I tapped. I tried something different this year and boiled everyday and froze it at the end. We just finished it off this afternoon. Tomorrow and Monday look good, so I might get another couple of cups of syrup. Did you tap this year?

This is great news. We know #LocalPolitics work & we need to empower the local. There is an upside to #NIMBYism: no one wants to live in an unhealthy & dangerous environment. Let’s start working more broadly to turn the #ClimateCrisis around. In #onpoli, we are moving in the wrong direction.

I don’t know whether #cdnpoli “needs” any of the mainstream political parties. They - & their provincial counterparts - are all fairly disappointing, despite there being some wonderful politicians active in #onpoli & #cdnpoli

We are laughing in #ldnont too. Provincial intervention has made life here worse, not better. #onpoli

It may be, but we can control how bad it is. I find the fatalism so depressing.

I really hate living in a world where we know there is a problem but don’t care enough to do anything about it. #ClimateCrisis

The is the federal government telling news stations to provide favorable coverage of the war or their licenses will be pulled.

A truly extraordinary moment.

We aren't on the verge of a totalitarian takeover. WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF IT.

Act like it.

This is precisely correct. We are paying the price for our addiction to fossil fuels… of course the price will be much steeper for our children. I don’t want that to happen, so I want YOU AND I to make radical lifestyle changes. Step 1: walk, ride, or bus locally & make wise food choices.

This isn't merely a "Canada" problem, but a challenge for all Western democracies. Escalating poverty and cloistered wealth have become staples, and if permitted to continue could tear us apart. It's a danger food banks across the country have been trying to speak to since the pandemic.

Ford government proposes FOI law change that would keep premier's records secret | CBC News Ontario is set to make Premier Doug Ford and cabinet members' records secret as it "modernizes" freedom-of-information laws, which critics say will dramatically curtail public scrutiny of the politica...

This decision just reinforces the view #onpoli has a #corruption problem. In addition to a bizarre #SpiceGirls reference, here’s a key line: “Records that would reveal cabinet deliberations or advice to government are already exempted under the current law.” www.cbc.ca/news/canada/... #cdnmedia

Yes. Exactly. I don’t mind changing the clocks. I hate waking up in the dark (& deeply respect the folks who have to do this all the time because of the nature of their work)

I suspect this is an unpopular opinion, but I hate #DaylightSavingsTime, at least switching as early as we do. For those of us who get up early, it is a prescription for several more weeks of dark mornings and it sucks. I don’t understand the movement against it. #onpoli #cdnpoli

I am still thinking about #Hadestown. It strikes me that placing a red ball cap on Hades would probably make this musical a little on the nose, but would probably drive home its resonance in our present-day moment.

Just back from #Hadestown in #ldnont. After listening to the music for over a decade (thanks @nhpr.org #FolkShow), it was amazing to finally see it all together. Through her music, @anaismitchell.bsky.social has created such a beautiful & touching story. The touring cast & musicians were amazing!

Forget the environment (for a moment): the events of the last few weeks demonstrate even more clearly why we should be investing in local sources of energy, especially renewables. It is damning that in #Ontario, we abandoned this path. #onpoli #ClimateCrisis #EnergyTransition
