Been thinking about Hans Westman so here’s his extension to the Catholic Cathedral in Stockholm (1983), entirely surreal and left me with far more questions than answers. Once again, Catholics cook crazy hard:

I will never say no to terrazzo staircases. The spiral stairs made me think of someone but this isn’t about him so I’m going to shut up! 🤐

Library date with Sir Bas!! 📖 Swung by Basil Spence’s Swiss Cottage Library (1964) on a sunny Saturday; pleased to be pondering buildings at home again. Light and airy, plus excellent stair game. I’d liked if we still had the pool:

New ship dropped, it’s Bengt Lindroos x Carl Nyrén! ⭐️ IBM in Kista. This is cute and I haven’t ever thought of them together. Also interested in this accidental childcare arrangement(??)

Shoutout to my lovely ArkDes friends who told me this story as we watched another “interesting formation” waddle by our table in said garden (“so yes, you see, we have also done the pairing architects thing 😄” - felt very seen.)

Roos/Thornberg lore so nonexistent that I’m finding *myself* on the search results. At this point it’s just a circle

Thinking about a bunch of guys who did buildings in Skåne but I should probably go to bed. Goodnight

WFH just means I spend lunch break drawing men instead which is equally revitalising 🔌🔋

I love how obsessed they were with each other. Can we bring this back in architectural partnerships

Thinking about the two male ducks that strolled the ArkDes gardens once upon a time and were lovingly named Backström & Reinius 🦆⭐️🦆

There’s another Lewerentz-designed mausoleum at the foot of the hill, the Belfrage family tomb (1919). He was just a baby… since been told there are other Asplund mausoleums/graves so due for an eventual revisit. I’m kind of into the big eaves, yes Lewerentz cook:

There are date discrepancies and the big books aren’t helping, sorry. Either way, L came first and built his, but then A came (what coincidence that they were next to each other 😗) and L just had to update his design after A’s. My god they were SO obsessed with each other. Wedding when, gentlemen?

No one is ever this excited about mausoleums but I did do a little dance when I finally got up here. Malmström and Rettig family tombs in Stockholm’s Norra begravningsplatsen, by Sigurd Lewerentz (1921) and Gunnar Asplund (1926) respectively:

Yes we have, briefly! It’s been on my TBR since then. One of the authors shares videos of the book’s subjects in a Malmö history FB group I’m in* which has been pretty cool to see.

(*farming obscure lore from the retired population when they aren’t having questionable politics. Works wonders)

Ahaha bless you! I’m sure I’ve seen it at some point, though I might be desensitised to Art Deco from living in London so don’t think I’ve ever taken any pictures. Thanks for the tip, adding it to my map 🫡✏️

I’ve really missed them. 💚 My other dream neighbourhood in Stockholm, Hökarängen and its Helldén/Lindroos combo got strong competition with Årsta’s Ahlséns/JC combo…

Modernist wine bars part 2: there is also a cute one with great vibes in Erik and Tore Ahlsén’s Folkets hus in Årsta centrum (1946-53). Concrete column for company! What’s not to love? 🍷

The winebarisation of modernist buildings needs to be studied. 🍷 I promise I am going to wine bars for research; here’s Solidar in Malmö (buried in sleepy Limhamn), ex-KF grocery store of the same name (Olof Hult, 1938):
