Figure showing number of competitive grants mentioning women from 2015-2025. The number was rising until recently, with a precipitous drop in the last year.

At the end of 2024, the National Academies put out a report concluding the NIH has woefully underfunded women’s health research, and they suggested $15 B should be invested over the next 5 years.

Here’s what’s happened instead. Hard to study women’s health if you can’t say “women.”

For U.S. medical researchers, shrinking labs and bare budgets are the new reality The Trump administration has slashed the number of grants from the National Institutes of Health, with far fewer focused on women, cancer and mental health.

American science is shrinking.

A Post analysis found that, halfway through this fiscal year, the number of competitive grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health is down by more than half compared with the same period last year. https://wapo.st/3OgoHKV

hang in there! it's not an uncommon place to start, plus the last couple rounds have been absolutely brutal. You've good data and good ideas and the scores will come in time.
If you want another pair of eyes on anything I'm always happy to read stuff over.

"'In the end, it was three women in a group chat trying everything in our power. It really has just been us'...

They worked to find pro bono legal counsel for the women and decided to direct them to a single news outlet, CNN...

'We’re just getting started.'”

I'm not religious, but I respect the importance that faith plays in people's lives. Posting an image of yourself as God is literally blasphemy. It shows a disregard for sacred imagery and, by extension, for the very concept of the divine. Trump should apologize.

during my first research experience as an undergrad there was one memorable day when I burst into tears after trying and failing to do this calculation three times.

Now I run and lab and have tenure and average about 50% of successful lab math. No tears though

Notionally Trump claims exclusive (false) credit for it. But the Artemis mission has this uncanny quality, like an alternative timeline where things aren't all wretched, absurd and degenerate - rooted in science, human striving, injgenuity and purpose. The contrast w the war in the Gulf is so great.
