FACE-ing the Amazon's Future 🌳
The burning of fossil #fuels, megafires and land-use changes drive #CO2 levels up. How will that affect the #Amazon? 🤔
A spectacular international project is about to find out - and #ECH from #univie is on board. 🔍 ⤵️ @loutsi.bsky.social

Crazy that THREE of our researchers at the Division of Terrestrial Ecosystem Research are Highly Cited Researchers 2025! And a total of 8 of Austria’s 54 are part of our Centre, CeMESS @cemess.bsky.social.

A 💥NEW STUDY💥 has found that warming depletes the Arctic soil’s nitrogen stores, irreversibly increasing CO₂ emissions! ⛰️ The reason why? 🧵
✍️This research has been published in @globalchangebio.bsky.social & led by our researcher @saramaranonjimenez.bsky.social, also researcher at @uab.cat!
It was so exciting to speak in such a beautiful hall, and did the opportunity to talk about traits of tropical roots, and the @tropiroot.bsky.social initiative at the #rhizosphere6 in Edinburgh this week!
Check out the poster by @daniarandi.bsky.social later today! Looking forward to learn more about halophyte microbiomes! #rhizosphere6
If you are at #rhizosphere6 and interested in fine root functional traits, go talk to @elsaelsam.bsky.social from @zalf.bsky.social. If you (like me - tearfully) miss out on this event, check out the paper in the thread below 😉
Brandnew out in Ecology, led by @tropiroot.bsky.social member Amanda Longhi!
The TropirRoot root trait database 1.0!!!
We're organizing an invited talk series featuring authors of recent publications on roots and belowground dynamics, focusing on their role in shaping aboveground functions and ecosystem processes. Please feel free to comment or email us relevant paper suggestions at tropiroottrait@gmail.com. Thanks
The AmazonFACE project is offering post doc scholarships, based in Manaus, Brazil!
AmazonFACE está contratando pós doc. Vagas de:
1- Traços funcionais relacionados à fotossíntese
2- Características da madeira e relações de crescimento
3- Impactos no ciclo biogeoquímico
4- Modelagem de vegetação - processos hidrológicos/ hidráulicos
Congratulations to Viktor Van de Velde from the UGhent and all the team to the publication of a chapter of his PhD thesis! We were investigating microbial soil P cycling rates in recovering forest after agricultural use in forests in the DRC, find out more here:

Do you have any wolf spiders (Lycosidae) collected in the last couple of years? If so, I am looking for specimens from any species and any location *in the world* to add to a genetic study of the family. Let me know if you think you can help!
A graph of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations at the Mauna Loa observatory, Hawaii, from 1958 to 4th February 2025. It shows carbon dioxide levels rising at an accelerating rate over the decades. This is known to be due to emissions of carbon dioxide from human activity, mainly fossil fuel burning but also deforestation. The first CO2 concentration value in March 1958 was 315 parts per million (ppm). The latest daily value is 426 ppm. The graph also shows a seasonal cycle of a few ppm within each year, which is known to be linked to the growing season in the northern hemisphere causing a temporary uptake of carbon in spring and summer and release in autumn. The graph is produced routinely by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego.
Although NOAA's page on atmospheric CO2 levels has vanished, you can still get this vital information from Ralph Keeling's team at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego keelingcurve.ucsd.edu

📢📢TropiRoot has transitioned to a new leadership team for next two years and is gearing up for exciting projects ahead! We’re expanding our outreach efforts and networking.
If you’re a tropical root researcher, interested in synthesizing and mobilizing your data, we’d love to connect with you!
Happy Boxing Day to all cats who celebrate! 📦🐈⬛
How do soil microbes respond to climate change?
Show off your cool studies at #EGU25 and submit your abstract now!
And I want to add a *challenging* environmental conditions
Welcome to Bluesky @albertocanarini.bsky.social
Wuuuhuuu!
Have you wondered why fungi could have more resilience during environmental conditions? They can produce storage compounds which may help them to remain active!
Thanks to all the team, esp. Alberto Canarini and Jörg Schnecker for conducting this experiment during challenging lockdowns!
#mycology folks... Ever wanted to programmatically search fungal names for synonyms on Mycobank? Notice that the R package for this has been broken for 7 years?
I've got you covered:
