Péter Magyar victory speech:

"We want to make a country where no one is persecuted because they think differently or because someone loves in a different way to others."

He may not have campaigned as a liberal. But this is a huge change of direction and rhetoric from Orbán’s anti-LGBTQ+ crusade.

An annoying Facebook post that reads: Today in New Zealand, 30 March, 2004, history Michael King was silenced by a fatal car crash at the age of 58. He was the author of 'The Penguin History of New Zealand' which was the most popular book of the year.
Here he is being interviewed about that book as it launched. King made the point that the fashion trend of referring to our country's name as
"Aotearoa" was a State imposition. He pushed back against it.
Ironically, the title of his own book has now succumbed to the very same pressure!

My response: Rachael King
Michael King did not "push back" against the use of Aotearoa, in fact used it liberally himself. Just because he lays out his understanding of the origins of the name, doesn't mean he thought it was not a legitimate name to adopt. Language evolves, and if this one word 'Aotearoa' gives us a Mãori equivalent of New Zealand to use alongside it, why is that a problem? He didn't think it was. Why should you use his words out of context to make a point that he didn't believe himself?

So frickin sick of these people taking our father’s words out of context for their own ends.

NZFirst is a party whose name sounds much less benign if you substitute any other country in.

You see America First, Germany First, Britain First, it conjures a particular image.

Maybe we shouldn't allow ourselves to become so desensitised to the nationalism in our own backyard.

One other thing, watching Jacinda in action, not an actor playing her but by crikey her with behind the scenes snippets never made it more obvious how much of a leadership vacuum we are in, Jacinda would never have failed us in a crisis, it should be complicity viewing #NZPol

Thanks Miravox! Yes it’s a huge and diverse electorate 😅 What events in Raglan do you think would good for us to be at? We are just building up our calendar of events around the electorate to attend. Please share our FB page if you can too, and let’s get the word out far and wide!

Every Country in Our Supply Chain Has Declared an Emergency. NZ just launched an Ad Campaign. What the ministerial press conference got wrong about NZ's fuel supply, and what it didn't mention at all.

An essential read for anyone in #nz - the fuel crisis is far, far worse than the govt is letting on energyandresilience.substack.com/p/every-coun...

Economists suggesting it could take a decade for NZ to recover from the shock that about to hit us.
I really don’t think this Govt is prepared for - or equipped to deal with - what’s ahead.
It feels as of, in spite of the performative pressers, no one’s driving.

Free public transport the fuel crisis response that makes sense Opinion from Auckland University: Targeted fuel relief doesn’t reduce a single litre of consumption. Free public transport, however, delivers household relief, eases congestion, and conserves fuel for...

In my latest for @newsroom.co.nz, I argue the government should make public transport free for at least three months. The $50 fuel payment costs $373M/year and doesn't cut a single litre of consumption. Free fares would cost less and actually reduce petrol demand.

Mr Hooton is obviously correct that diesel rationing must begin at once, and that the consequences of a diesel shortage are catastrophic, and that a “diesel for food” arrangement is New Zealand’s best leverage, and thus the chances of the government actually acting now are low to nil

We bought our Leaf from Drive EV, these guys are wonderful! Happy to see a whole more people are going to discover the joys of EVs, even though the reason for it is sobering.

Early advice from the Minister for COVID-19 Response to Cabinet was that
a strong health response was the best economic response. This was repeated
in the Cabinet papers of 20, 23, 27 and 30 August, and 6 September. The
20 August 2021 paper set out the evidence officials considered supported
that advice.
° New Zealand’s infection and death rates were among the lowest in
the world.
° New Zealand’s unemployment rate was at the pre-COVID level of
4 percent, because jobs and businesses had been protected with the
wage subsidy. Unemployment in New Zealand peaked at 5.3 percent
(whereas in the United States and Canada it rose above 10 percent).
° Economic activity in the March 2021 quarter was 2.4 percent above the
previous year.
° The Government was in a ‘strong financial position’ – net core Crown debt
stood at 31.2 percent of GDP at the end of May 2021, 8.8 percent lower
than the forecast 44 percent (a difference of approximately $40 billion).
‘This gives us options to keep investing to protect New Zealanders and
accelerate our recovery’

So Chris Hipkins not only took advice & kept the economy afloat and jobs and businesses alive through #Covid-19, he pushed to keep Kiwis healthy and alive at a time when corpses were piled up across Italy, UK, US, and India.

A country surrounded by the ocean, with active geothermal zones, buffeted by winds and basking in sunshine should not be relying on tanker loads of oil, gas and coal shipped half way across the world to run its energy network.

Don’t worry (too much), they aren’t native skinks, they are an introduced, kinda-invasive Australian skunk called the plaque skunk! All except one of our ~140 native species give birth to live young!!

I became Senior VP at a multi-million dollar company at age 26. My salary was $600k. This was in 2018.
How did I do it?

Blacked out lines

CEO (my dad) promoted me to SVP.
There are no gimmicks. There are no shortcuts.

Recent events show that climate change impacts can be hyper local, and specific areas seem to be getting hit by the same extreme weather repeatedly.

What ideas do you all have on the priorities for an incoming government in building community resilience & preparedness for extreme weather?

Another week, another state of emergency!
We need a government that is willing to do all it can to mitigate the impacts of our new climate.

European Parliament Votes Overwhelmingly For "The Full Recognition Of Trans Women As Women" The resolution, though nonbinding, is a significant shot at those who seek to erode transgender rights on the continent.

In incredible news, the European Parliament has voted overwhelmingly for "The Full Recognition Of Trans Women As Women."

Even the center-right European People's Party voted for the declaration.

It will form a foundation for their position at the UN Commission on the Status of Women.

Our latest.

How do we engage voters in Aotearoa? Hononga - connection! Where are the relatable politicians? Those who care that folx are struggling, that hospitals, schools, universities are underfunded; that Te Tiriti is a toanga and Aotearoa embraces diversity and doesn’t discriminate! #NZWiL

Time for the 3-30-300 Rule to be Planning Law

And funded by a 50% FAR scheme with Central Gov or with any urban renewal 85% EFAR rate

FAR and EFAR = Funding or Enchanced Funding Assistant Rate
It is a formula NZTA uses with local authorities for transport but can be adapted to Green Infrastructure
