Great working with you on this Kevin!
Ahh, thanks, Gavin!
Excited to share a new article from the lab & wonderful co-authors.
We argue that habitat fragmentation research needs to be recalibrated to focus on changes over time.
We hope that doing so will advance understanding, isolate attribution, and diminish heated debate.

Washington Post article on STEM cuts at federal agencies. NSF tops it at -42%!
“Between January 2025 and February 2026, STEM and health employees at science-focused agencies saw nearly 15,000 jobs cut. The rate outpaced cuts among other federal workers.”
OPM data - Figure from Wash Post article 19 April. (Where US science has been hit hardest.)
NSF at -42%!
BBC: There’s a lovely film on Youtube called How Wolves Change Rivers. It describes how wolf reintroduction to Yellowstone precipitated a series of ecological benefits…It’s a beautiful and uplifting notion but, according to some scientists, total nonsense.🧪

This Monks Wood #rewilding (natural colonisation) plot is 30 years old this year. It's taken that long for this single Bluebell to migrate 20m from adjacent ancient woodland to colonise the plot. But now it's here, joining the growing trees & shrubs: future ancient woodland in the making.

Biodiversity of #rainforest can recover within decades when located in highly connected landscapes because animal mobility drives natural recovery. Our @reassemblynet.bsky.social synthesis paper is out @nature.com: tinyurl.com/4w24a96b

Thrilled that my collaborator and friend, Ara Monadjem, will be receiving this year's Royal Society Africa Prize.
He has made such an impact across Africa for his work on ecology, evolution, and conservation.
Go see his lecture next month!

A few weeks ago the headquarters of southeastern DRC's Upemba National Park was attacked by a separatist militia, leaving 7 people dead. It's the worst conflict-related incident in conservation since 2020. I talked to some of the survivors for @mongabay.com

Thanks for this contribution to "Ecological Applications"!🙌
Very excited to announce that we are hiring for three faculty positions at @universityofleeds.bsky.social in @bioscienceleeds.bsky.social: A/Prof Plant Science, A/Prof Animal Biology and Lecturer in Ecology, Zoology, Biodiversity or Ecosystem Management. Please do get in touch to chat. Links below:
Go work with Gavin—he is fantastic!
As did South Africa, where introduced pine trees (which consume more water than native vegetation) threaten water supplies and fuel wildfires.
I’m recruiting a PhD and MSC student for fall 2026 working on the movement ecology and conservation of Mexican spotted owls in SW forests and rocky canyonlands. Exciting partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory. Great vibrant lab group, high impact research! 🦉

This thread shows a deliberate defunding of U.S. science, engineering, social science, innovation, and education excellence. It’s a U.S. national security, competitiveness, and economic disaster.
