This week, we’re reading Caseen Gaines’ WHEN BROADWAY WAS BLACK, the triumphant story of how an all-Black Broadway cast and crew changed musical theatre with the 1921 Broadway hit, Shuffle Along.

His final work, PRINCE OF BROADWAY, celebrated his life and contributions to the Broadway stage.
During his long-time collaboration with Stephen Sondheim, he produced and directed COMPANY, FOLLIES, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, PACIFIC OVERTURES, SWEENEY TODD, and MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG. With Andrew Lloyd Webber, he directed and produced EVITA and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
As Prince expanded his circle of collaborators, he worked with creative teams to produce some of the most iconic and beloved shows in the musical theatre canon: WEST SIDE STORY, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, CABARET, and more.
