Oxford Translates is delighted that @commapress.bsky.social Press is partnering with us to hold a translation competition for our Urdu workshop participants. The winning translator will be commissioned to translate a story for one of Comma’s forthcoming anthologies.
Her most recent translation is The Prisoner: Behind Bars in Putin’s Russia, by Vladimir Pereverzin. Anna has taught at City University, London, and the University of Bristol, as well as leading workshops at the British Library, Translate at City and Bristol Translates.
Among her titles are Pavlov’s award-winning novel Requiem for a Soldier and Mikail Eldin’s war memoir The Sky Wept Fire, winner of an English PEN award. Her translations of Pavel Bazhov’s fairy tales appear in Russian Magic Tales from Pushkin to Platonov, shortlisted for the 2014 Rossica Prize.
Anna Gunin is a translator of novels and memoirs, films and folk tales, plays and poetry. She co-translated Svetlana Alexievich’s Chernobyl Prayer (Penguin Modern Classics), lauded in the TLS as a ‘masterly new translation’ that ‘retains the nerve and pulse of the Russian’.
This year's inaugural Russian-English workshop at Oxford Translates will be led by acclaimed translator @annagunin.bsky.social.
