Though I didn't have sheep on my #H5N1 #birdflu bingo card, by this point nothing should surprise me or us about this tricky, tricky virus.
The UK has found an infected sheep. Where there's one, there certainly could be more. www.gov.uk/government/n...

Characterisation of a novel merbecovirus lineage, HKU5-CoV-2, shows it can not only utilise hACE2 but do so more efficiently than it's predecessors.
The viral landscape is always evolving! That's why it's so vital for 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 country to stay engaged with infectious disease research.
The sass is palpable 💅
#USDA confirmed 5 more #H5N1 #birdflu infected dairy herds today, bringing the state's total to 744 herds. CA's Dept of Food & Ag says 280 of those herds have recovered/cleared quarantine. The cumulative national total is 967 herds in 16 states. www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-po...
What a nice surprise to see @socialinfluenza.bsky.social on Sky News this morning talking about the recent H5N1 human case in the UK. Very well laid out and communicated Ed 🙌

What was a suspected outbreak of #marburg in Tanzania has now been confirmed by laboratory diagnostic testing. We saw #Rwanda respond promptly and crush its own outbreak just weeks ago. I'm rooting for responders in Tanzania to do the same.

No, thank you!
I think I've done these every year since like 2019 now? 🎄
Will definitely give this one a go.
Spreading infective festive cheer by making sure everyone knows about @socialinfluenza.bsky.social Ed Hutchinson's wonderful virus snowflakes ❄️

Hyper-capitalism ruins the day again ✨
👋
This is sounding more and more like a cocktail of factors leading to a known pathogen wrecking more havoc than usual..
Malnutrition, predominantly young (64% cases), remote region, malaria (potential co-infections?)
I haven't moved to bluesky to be personally attacked like this 😭
Very concerning! I have seen rumblings about a potential retrospective case in Italy from a traveller but seems unlikely.
Seen suggestion that M. pneumoniae may account for symptoms + anaemia but that would be a huge increase in mortality % than normally seen, even in remote rural communities 🤔
Interesting, would line up with children being heavily affected. Someone in our group also suggested enterovirus.
Curious to hear the thoughts of #IDSky ?
Not news that is nice to wake up to 🫠
The good: Mild case, presumably no adaptations like in Canadian case
The bad: Unknown source of infection, whole family reported symptoms
The ugly: Case numbers increasing and adaptation risk is still there

Do you want to become a virologist?
The @CVRinfo PhD programme is now recruiting for both UK and international applicants - rotate in two labs then choose a project tailored to your interests.
Also you get to live in Glasgow, which is fab.
Please RT!

New SARS-CoV-2 paper from Statens Serum Institut 🇩🇰
Keep vaccinating your over 65s! 💉
Can't say I've ever used flowjo on a Mac (Windows gang 4lyfe) but I would go with whichever machine has the largest amount of RAM.
Chances are they might both struggle with that many samples of spectral flow but 🤞
Love these starter packs! May I also be included in the third repertoire? 😊
