Violet is now starting an MSc to further investigate the thermal stress responses of triploid blue mussels. So stay tuned for more exciting research to come from her!

This work provides important recommendations for hatcheries, as stable temperatures improve the survival of triploid larvae. Also, while our current pressure shock induction method works well for mussels from Prince Edward Island, the protocol could be optimized for mussels from other regions.

Incredibly proud of the first Honours student I co-supervised, Violet Chilvers, who published her thesis in Aquaculture Research! Her research explored how source, ploidy and thermal regime impact the growth and survival of blue mussel larvae.

This research provides an excellent foundation as we develop tools to help identify mussels that will be more resilient to climate change-induced increases in ocean temperatures.

P.E.I. hatchery says it's produced 1st MSX-resistant oyster seed in Canada  | CBC News A hatchery in western Prince Edward Island says it has produced the first batch of MSX-resistant oyster seed, but at least one expert says it's still too early to determine those results.

A hatchery on Prince Edward Island claims to have produced Canada's first MSX-resistant oyster seed. In an interview with CBC, I helped provide some context on how that might be hard to tell at this stage. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Application of genomic tools to study and potentially improve the upper thermal tolerance of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) - BMC Genomics Background The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) aquaculture industry must mitigate the impacts of rising ocean temperatures and the increased prevalence/severity of marine heat waves. Therefore, we inves...

Excited to share our latest work that studied how upper thermal tolerance is regulated in farmed Atlantic salmon! We combined RNA-sequencing and GWAS results to explore how gene expression and genetic architecture may influence this important trait.
