Well, not in Ireland, but certainly in the UK:
The current UK economic backwardness has been exacerbated by Brexit, and I struggle to think of any other explanation for why so many people voted for Brexit....

The 21st century will be won by the states that, in a developed world where skilled young people are increasingly in short supply, are able to overcome their own xenophobia to welcome the future
Job Interview with a Cat Tell me, what is it about this position that interests you? The warmth, perhaps? The security? Or the power you must feel by rendering me useless? Feel free to expand if you wish. I see you have had experience of similar positions. Can you talk about a time when you got somebody’s tongue? Or were set amongst the pigeons? Tell me about a time you’ve had to deal with a difficult situation – for instance, have you ever found yourself in a bag? If so, how were you let out of it? How would you feel if you had to walk on hot bricks? What about a tin roof of similar temperature? With reference to any of your past lives, has curiosity ever killed you? Finally, where do you see yourself in five years’ time? In the same position? Or higher up to catch the sunlight? What’s that? You would like to be where I am now? Oh, it appears you already are. Brian Bilston
Today’s poem is called ‘Job Interview with a Cat’.
A very moving tribute to one of the founders of modern Stem Cell Biology: Gail Martin.
Well worth a read.

It may seem like nerdy detail that the increasing weight of cars is worsening potholes, but it matters.
The car makers push to sell wider and heavier cars is increasing road maintenance costs and that affects us all.
Not to mention worse crash outcomes and less space to pass (wider) parked cars.
Very pleased to say that the paper version of our study examining the role of de novo DNMTs in cancer-associated hypomethylation is now out in @plos.org Genetics 🎉:

Hang on....really? How did i not know this? Why dont you START with that, @jordisolana.bsky.social ???
Great model organism, great project, great labs, great location. If you are thinking about doing a PhD, what more do you want?

Our work on chromatin evolution in brown algae is now published in @natecoevo.nature.com! We show that developmentally complex brown algae evolved without epigenetic silencing pathways long thought universal, underscoring why non-model lineages are important to study. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
