This #overshoot occurs because people emit more COā than the biosphere can absorb, use more freshwater than is replenished, harvest more trees than can regrow, fish quicker than stocks replenish, etc.
This overuse beyond what nature can renew inevitably depletes Earthās natural capital.
Today is #EarthOvershootDay.
Falling on July 24th means that humanity is currently using nature 1.8 times faster than Earths ecosystems can regenerate.

By this Thursday, 24 July, humanity will have used more from nature than Earth can regenerate in a year. That means weāre living as if we had 1.8 planets & pushing well past natureās limits.
In ten days, we are in #overshoot. We will have used up natureās entire annual budget of ecological resources and services.

In recognition of #WorldPopulationDay, weāre taking a closer look at one of the key solutions in our Power of Possibility resource: population.

Uruguay stands out as a relative sustainability leader, showcasing how national policies and lifestyles can shift a countryās Overshoot Day much closer to the yearās end. Yet even this commendable position reminds us that global balance requires more than just barely enough.
Reminder: #EarthOvershootDay falls on July 24 this year!
Fun Fact: Uruguay has the latest Overshoot Day in the worldāDecember 17āthe only one that falls in December this year! Its per capita ecological footprint is comparatively small.
Our founder, met today with Vice President Carolina Cosse, who is currently serving as acting president in the absence of President Orsi (Uruguay). Their discussion focused on the growing importance of biocapacity in a predictable future shaped by climate change and increasing resource constraints.

If the problem is to be solved by humanely reducing birthrates instead of suffering increasing death rates, we must move immediately. Reducing birthrates takes time, but the history of reproductive change has demonstrated that empowerment of girls and women in society is key,

āOur global population is already well above what is sustainable in even the medium term, as Earth Overshoot Day makes perfectly clear. š§µ

Population threatens to destabilize our ecosystems & societies alike. The longer we delay the discussion, the more devastating our legacy will be.
Itās an uncomfortable subject, fraught with racist & classist undertones, but it must be discussed nonetheless.ā #WorldPopulationDay
Happy July 4th to our friends in the USA, where todayās #PopulationVoices spotlight comes from.
Genevieve Tarino challenges the notion that talking about population is āanti-humanā:
āIād say that it is anti-human not to discuss population.
āThe key for me is to understand the problem as one of resource security: how much do we have in our country and how much do we spend? This is what we refer to as #biocapacity.ā
