This #overshoot occurs because people emit more CO₂ than the biosphere can absorb, use more freshwater than is replenished, harvest more trees than can regrow, fish quicker than stocks replenish, etc.

Uruguay stands out as a relative sustainability leader, showcasing how national policies and lifestyles can shift a country’s Overshoot Day much closer to the year’s end. Yet even this commendable position reminds us that global balance requires more than just barely enough.

Fun Fact: Uruguay has the latest Overshoot Day in the world—December 17—the only one that falls in December this year! Its per capita ecological footprint is comparatively small.
