Just found out @emilymandel.bsky.social has a new book coming out (in the same moment when I was longing for a new book from her) and I simply must thank her for her service.

Woooo!!
You can talk to me! It's absolutely excellent. The increase of complexity in season two was a marvel to behold.

Page of The Song of the Dodo that reads "It may be odious to behold, but it's inescapable for anyone concerned with later developments in island biogeography. Close your eyes and I'll print it quickly. S = cAZ All right, you can open them."
Page of The Song of the Dodo that reads "Hello, are you still with me? Have you forgiven me for mentioning logarithms?"
There is so much to love about @quammen.bsky.social's The Song of the Dodo, but I am particularly enjoying how he intersperses a wealth of information on island biogeography, evolution, and extinction with moments of levity. And dad jokes.
Absolutely stunning
A sprig of green moss is covered in small orange blobs or balls. The orange material is an immature fruiting slime mold.

I love being alive on this planet
I was delaying starting intermezzo because I love Sally Rooney's other works so much I was afraid of being disappointed in this one. Instead, I'm again impressed at how she renders the hidden tenderness of people who love deeply but struggle to say it aloud. Very much want to give Ivan a hug.
Being a good friend is reminding them Jordan Peterson is an alleged Russian propagandist.
Or to feel that for the sake of street cred you need to downplay your enthusiasm for something.
It must be a miserable existence to consume all that content and not love at least some of it.

If you got answers you didn't want and need someone who's been through the process to talk to -- I've just finished cancer treatment and my DMs are open. Please feel welcome to reach out ❤️
Saw someone upbraiding someone else for having a hobby while the world is on fire, and, my friends:
1. The world is ever on fire, this is today's conflagration;
2. If you don't find time for rest and joy the fire will consume you;
3. Don't let people shame you for being an entire human.
Sending so much love and best wishes! Hope it's all clear ❤️
Absolutely incredible!!!
Copy of Last Night in Montreal lying face down on a grey bedspread with a flower motif
Picture of a page of Last Night in Montreal featuring the highlighted quote, "And if you accept this, he told her, this premise that every language holds something that exists in no other tongue, an entity far outweighing the sum of its words, then the loss takes on a staggering weight. It isn't so much a question of losing three thousand words for everything. There aren't three thousand words for everything; the speakers of Yupik have no reason to describe tigers in the High Arctic; the speakers of the jungle languages need no words for the northern lights. It isn't even so much about the words. His belief was that these are not just languages we lose in the gloaming, not just three thousand sets of every word, but three thousand ways of existing on this earth."
Just started Last Night in Montreal by Emily St. John Mandel. It's the forth book of hers I've read and I'm perpetually in awe of how she manages to create such a frictionless, immersive reading experience. It looks effortless but I'm certain it's not.

There was a time in my life when I viewed exercise as punishment and I worked really hard to change that relationship so after many months of not being able to move the way I want because of cancer treatment, it's amazing to be in a place in life where movement = joy again!
Just completed my final session of radiation! 🎉🎉🎉
"We often hear about Capitalism's contradictions, but I think the most tragic one is that we teach kids pro-social behaviors like to share, to be kind and to work together.... . ..but then when they grow up, they're rewarded for outcompeting others, being cutthroat & ruthless in the workplace & if they achieve wealth & power, they're often rewarded for many more anti-social behaviors." . - David Graeber
If the events of this week and the reality of the Private Healthcare Industry have shown us anything, it is that we need to think about other ways of doing things.
Idk man I just feel like people wouldn't be tying themselves in such knots over whether his online presence proves he's a "good" or "bad" guy if he weren't the object of many an internet crush. But this could be an oversimplification.
How much of the ongoing discussion around + desire to fit Luigi Mangione into the "good guy folk hero" box comes from the fact that he is conventionally attractive? Like, if he were a little less hot, would he still dominate our timelines or would this story have already been buried by other news?
These are gorgeous, Frank. Every time I see a slime mold it feels like witnessing a glitch in the matrix. They're so weird yet they exist???
