An interesting observation from the summer - Spittlebug froth is bitter to keep predators away, but sometimes paper wasps are able to snatch larvae from their frothy protection. The adult wasps feed larvae to their babies. #WaspWednesday

please don’t put earthworms on iNaturalist. unless you are willing to get as close as you can and only photograph mature adults, photos are essentially pointless

I finally found a Japanese house centipede (Thereuonema tuberculata)! I've been hoping to find one in my home for years, what a rush. A gorgeous little critter. This one is from Richmond, Virginia.

same worm rear, but the bristles are less noticeable

earthworms move by gripping surfaces with many tiny setae. the spacing of setae in lumbricid earthworms is a useful taxonomic character, if tricky to see for the unaided eye, but O. cyaneum is a big worm so its widely paired setae are noticeable when flexed!

there was a big stream of Carebara ants (doing the Sit on Sister thing!) and one of these just plowed through them unharmed because of how smooth and round it was. truly a blessed creature
