(3/12) Here are Megaponera analis workers returning from a successful raid of a termite colony, their mandibles stuffed with bounty. The largest workers assemble and carry balls of up to twelve termites at a time. That’s also the number of beers an Oktoberfest waitress carries.

Close-up of the extremely small wasp. Like I said, it has really good antennal clubs.

Dear waspos, anyone know this lil gal who turned up in a carrion trap? ~1mm long, no wing veins to speak of, rather nice antennal clubs

Macro photograph of a shiny, nearly hairless orange ant in side view against a black background. The ant’s antennae are alert, raised, and the eyes are bulbous and located oddly at the very top of the ant’s head.

An isopod sitting on wood slightly in profile

It’s the 19th day of #crustmas and earlier this month I went out in the cold 40° weather to find this wild #isopod for this celebration. (Shot near Cincinnati 12-4-24) #photography #invert #macrophotography #crustacean

A wasp with dark orange and yellow stripes. It looks like it is sampling spittlebug froth from the stem of a plant.

A wasp with dark orange and yellow stripes. It looks like it is sampling spittlebug froth from the stem of a plant.

An interesting observation from the summer - Spittlebug froth is bitter to keep predators away, but sometimes paper wasps are able to snatch larvae from their frothy protection. The adult wasps feed larvae to their babies. #WaspWednesday

sorry if this is a stupid question but how do you know if a worm is fully matured?

1 year ago 0 0 0 0

please don’t put earthworms on iNaturalist. unless you are willing to get as close as you can and only photograph mature adults, photos are essentially pointless

I finally found a Japanese house centipede (Thereuonema tuberculata)! I've been hoping to find one in my home for years, what a rush. A gorgeous little critter. This one is from Richmond, Virginia.

Hey science writers! As you prep your annual list of coolest species described in the past year, I humbly suggest you highlight the Dragon Ball pill millipede! Discovered by a team of Thai scientists, no parachute science here! Look at these beauties!

earthworms move by gripping surfaces with many tiny setae. the spacing of setae in lumbricid earthworms is a useful taxonomic character, if tricky to see for the unaided eye, but O. cyaneum is a big worm so its widely paired setae are noticeable when flexed!

there was a big stream of Carebara ants (doing the Sit on Sister thing!) and one of these just plowed through them unharmed because of how smooth and round it was. truly a blessed creature
