happy #waspwednesday - anyone eager to enjoy a mashup of #taylorswift and #wasps should come along to the Stand in Edinburgh on 21st April for the next Bright Club. Tickets available here www.thestand.co.uk/performance/...
Happy #waspwednesday everyone! Here's the latest article from wasp HQ www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
In a nutshell - controlling crop pests using parasitoid wasps is evolutionarily resilient to resistance evolution in pests because parasitoids are cool #science #evolution #parasitoid
Bright green wasp with small eyes and dark wings against grey bark.
Sad #WaspWednesday as I have to cut down front yard dogwood tree, which leans at an alarming angle. Hope to preserve the trunk & save either the Trypoxiline wasps nesting in there or the offspring of this cuckoo wasp (Caenochrysis sp) I caught hunting for their nest.

Green nugget wasp with red eyes and protruding needle-like ovipositor on a green and grey flower stem with long white hairs.
Is it #WaspWednesday already?

happy belated #waspwednesday - here's a belated wasp update from wasp HQ from *Dr* Mia McGowan. #Biocontrol of #whitefly with #parasitoids is evolutionarily resilient because resistant whitefly lay fewer eggs with lower hatching success academic.oup.com/jee/advance-...
Happy #waspwednesday from me and the @evomob.bsky.social. Here is a picture of a mating pair of thynnid flower wasps I saw on my holiday to #TorresdelPaine national park in #Patagonia #Chile

Happy #waspwednesday everyone. The #parasitoid wasp Tachardiaephagus somervilli saved the #christmasislandcrabs from extinction by controlling an invasive mealybug and its symbiotic ant which was eating the crabs #waspstotherescue read more here www.cabidigitallibrary.org/doi/pdf/10.1...

A black and white wasp with golden legs. She's got her ovipositor deployed and it laying eggs through a hole in a leaf.
How do I know this is a female? In wasps they are the ones with the pointy appendage used for poking things.

#WaspWednesday
A black wasp with a reddish abdomen, gold legs, and long black antennae with white stripes. She also has a pointy ovipositor (egg laying appendage that looks like a stinger.) The wasp is standing on a leaf.
What the heck, I'm adding to #WaspWednesday tonight. Found this little lady the other day. She was preening and cleaning and sat still for a few photos.
Ichneumonid Wasp, PA
Black wasp with yellow stripes and markings, dark wings, and orange antennae visiting a small green flower.
For #waspwednesday and National #Pollination Week here is a pollen wasp, Celonites abbreviatus, from Tuscany (6/23). Like bees, these evolved from provisioning their nests with prey to provisioning with pollen and nectar. They transport the pollen internally, so aren’t good pollinators. #insects
European paper wasp in 3/4 view on an old wooden rail in late afternoon sunlight. The wasp is black and yellow with yellow facial marks and orange wings, legs, and antennae.
The same wasp, but further away from the camera and the left back leg up.
The same wasp, but a side profile this time.

A weevil wasp sipping on some goldenrod for #WaspWednesday. Wasps of this genus will dig a nesting site and provision it with beetles (weevils are beetles). #Inverts

A black and white wasp with green eyes and golden legs. She has her ovipositor out of its sheath and is directing it through a hole in a leaf.
A female parasitoid wasp laying eggs. Her preferred hosts are leaf roller moths. She lays her egg in the caterpillar and the wasp larva consumes the host. One interesting bit you can see here is that she keeps her ovipositor in a sheath. #WaspWednesday #Inverts

Happy #waspwednesday ! I am celebrating an ID to species (courtesy of Prof Matthias Buck on #iNaturalist ) of a seldom-observed Pisonopsis birkmanni. I rescued this wee beastie from a swimming pool and got a event set of photos as he warmed up and dried off on my hand. #bugsky #inverts #insects

This intimidating looking wasp is a Four-banded Stink Bug Wasp. You might see adults feeding on flowers during summertime. They build simple nests in sandy soil and hunt stink bugs to provision those nests.
