it goes even further. Scientists put this proprietary software they have no idea about how it works as conditions in their invitation of tenders for spectrometers.

wait… so he could technically be king without title? Not that any of it makes sense, but this even fails the internal logic of a monarchy.

Our long awaited equipment installations began this week with the set up of our 600 Evo standard bore magnet for solid-state NMR!

Doug Lyons from @brukercorporation.bsky.social will be pumping the magnet soon, and charging sometime next week.

egg content? flour composition? porosity? different drying process? The latter is actually really complicated. it is very difficult to make dry pasta at home that isn‘t brittle, for example.

I guess you can change the shims, but it will be difficult to improve the homogeneity/lineshape like that.

LOL, of course! Big(-ish) magnets, tiny magnets (spins), pulsed magnets, microwaves, radio-frequencies, and light :D

Extremely happy to announce that I was awarded an @snsf.ch starting grant to lead my own project @ethz.ch starting next year! 🎉
Thanks to everyone who supported and encouraged me along the way! Exciting times ahead. (Will be looking for doctoral students soon-ish).

Very high frequency (263 GHz) pulse EPR spectroscopy of high spin transition metal centers Pulse Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy provides powerful tools for examining species with unpaired electrons, such as organic radicals and metal ions, in a wide variety of interest...

A paper describing the performance of our new TWT powered 263 GHz pulse EPR spectrometer is now available as a preprint

In our recently submitted grants we had to change “traumatic brain injury” to “concussive brain injury” and “male and female mice” to “male and non-male mice” because traumatic and female are now verboten words that can get our grants killed. It’s insanity.

Selective isotope labeling probes the chemical capacity and reaction mechanism of a heterobimetallic Mn/Fe protein The R2-like ligand binding oxidase (R2lox) forms a novel tyrosine-valine crosslink upon O2 activation, reflecting an overall two-electron oxidation re…

Congrats, Josephine and the team!! Check out our newest mechanistic deep dive into R2lox: Isotope labeling and EPR spectroscopy reveal that this Mn/Fe enzyme activates C–H bonds to form a unique Tyr–Val crosslink via a Mn⁴⁺/Fe⁴⁺ intermediate.

for the rent and machines anymore. Science funding is much more than just subsidies.

Hi Art, I agree with this part. But there are no „customers“ and the money is not „investment“ in the sense that you have to pay back with more money. I am not saying that this rhetoric caused these dillusional funding cuts, but imagine a Bagel shop owner complaining that the government doesn‘t pay
