I'm 50. I was at a museum dance party. Sweet Caroline got mixed in as the final track.

It was exactly like an episode of Black Mirror.

Today, more than 10,000 people across the United States and beyond Stood Up for Science. I feel deeply humbled, inspired, and energized—our work is far from over, but witnessing so many people unite to champion science and the hope it brings is truly incredible.

Scenes from the incredible turnout today at Berkeley's @standupforscience.bsky.social rally. @tedmiguel.bsky.social, @jenniferdoudna.bsky.social, and dozens of researchers, elected officials, and citizens defended science and the jobs, health benefits, and progress it creates for all Americans.

If I were Canadian PM I would immediately:

1. Create a new $15B science fund

2. Offer any credentialed US scientist funding for lab startup and replacement of NIH grants if they move to Canada

3. Immediate permanent residency

4. Citizenship after 2 years

Overnight a science superpower

Do you ever get the feeling that Earth gravity is...a bit much? Tripping and falling should not be as big of a deal as it is.

If you’re in an institution doing any kind of DEI work, the most important thing to do right now is simply call it something else. Change it to “Community Outreach” & then keep on doing the same important work. When they outlaw Community Outreach rebrand it as “Strategic Partnerships,” rinse/repeat.

an off the top of my head list of people to read instead of neil gaiman, who sucks:

n k jemisin
bora chung
silvia moreno-garcia
ursula k le guin
octavia butler
xiran jay zhao
ted chiang
neon yang
the readymade bodhisattva (anthology of south korean sci fi)

add more if you want!

Reading the revelations about Neil Gaiman is giving me major Jian Ghomeshi flashbacks.

From the "I'm not abusive, I'm just kinky" rationales to the faux-feminist persona to the victim complex that holding him accountable is terrible for his mental health.

It's a playbook Canadians recognize.

Finland is teaching children in school how to recognize fake news and propaganda as part of critical thinking and civic responsibility. Some of this will seem very familiar.

Be. Like. Finland.

@ctfm-lab.bsky.social Hello there: I noticed the TEM figure in you profile — it looks great! I think that might be the most illustrative picture of #ALDep I have ever seen. Has it been published somewhere? Could I find (or receive) a copy, and get the permission to reuse it in teaching?
