I am so excited to share our new findings with you! We provide the structural evidence for a direct protein-to-DNA information pathway, showing how a bacterial enzyme 'reads' its own structure to 'write' DNA. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Most biologics are glycosylated and some of them heavily. In this “fresh off the press" #glycotime preprint we look into how a filter that accounts for glycosylation explicitly in 3D can help reduce lab costs and increase the efficiency of de novo binder design pipelines. Short 🧵 ⬇️ 1/7
We have some fresh and cool #glycotime 🧪 on the impact of including glycosylation explicitly in de novo binder design. Filtering the results of a recent open competition for novel binders to the Nipah Virus Glycoptrotein (NiV-G) with ReGlyco improves the pipeline efficiency significantly ⬇️
Prokaryotes offer wonderful glycosylation diversity but are very hard to study. This software looks to be the tool to use to study them.
There's excellent attention to detail for the glycan aspect, which is often the underappreciated part of glycopeptides. I'm envious of the samples!

Exciting news from our lab 🎉
One of our talented postdocs, Dr. Robin Veenstra, has been awarded an NWO XS grant for the high-risk, high-reward project “Bridging the gap between virus and host.”

Congrats Robin, and good luck with the project!
Opinie van @RenskeLeijten en mij in de Volkskrant (zonder betaalmuur nu) over de datakluis:

Today we have @incarnatolab.bsky.social visiting for a seminar at the Bijvoet Center. Great talk!

The small protein cryo-EM paper I helped start has been accepted in Nature Communications - what a relief. Thanks to @landerlab.bsky.social and @olibclarke.bsky.social for their constructive review. Congratulations to all co-authors, and wishing everyone good luck.

Today we celebrated, in the presence of the Dutch minister of Education, Culture and Science, Rianne Letschert, the NWO Roadmap grants, including the BioBeyond_NL and EMPower grants investing in infrastructures for biology beyond the genome and for electron microscopy in the Netherlands!
We have a 3-year post-doc position open. Apply now and join BioBeyond_NL to power up mass spec studies with new chemical biology tools!

I would have never thought to study cetacean coronaviruses, but with @danielhurdiss.bsky.social @utrechtvirology.bsky.social being in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine they keep turning up with all sorts of stuff from the farms and zoo's around here 😜
Out now at PLoS Pathogens @plos.org. Nice collaboration with @danielhurdiss.bsky.social @utrechtvirology.bsky.social. Some beautiful glycoproteomics work by @tshamorkina.bsky.social mapping N- and O-glycan shield of coronaviruses infecting whales and dolphins 🐋🐬🐳.

We used our new ivRIC method to map host proteins inside HIV-1 particles, finding 100+ proteins that the virus hijacks to boost infection.
This project has a long history, spanning from pre-COVID to now! Driven by Manuel Garcia-Moreno and led by @alf-castello.bsky.social

The cartwheel was first visualized ~70 years ago in the symbiont Trichonympha in the wood termite gut. We’ve discovered the cartwheel’s secret: a unique zigzag stacking of SAS-6 tetramers that facilitates the iconic 9-fold symmetry of cilia.

Wildlife trade drives animal-to-human pathogen transmission over 40 years
New in @science.org ‼️ In the most comprehensive study to date, we show that wildlife trade is driving animal-to-human zoonotic spillover at a planetary scale, with +1 spillover per host every 10 years. Live animal markets and illegal trade pose even greater risks. 🔓 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
