97 public libraries in Scotland have permanently closed since 2008.
Libraries are an essential community service, providing far more than just books. We'll ensure councils have the financial backing they need so that no community is left without access to one.

Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage. A woman answers the door. We have come for the child, says the hooded figure So soon? she asks It is time, says the hooded figure. The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card! What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading! For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman, the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them. Do not cry mother. I am a writer now.

I was mulling over including The Murderer’s Ape too! I haven’t read Splinter and Ash but Ink Girls is one of my favourites so I must check this out.
I wonder if this differs depending on whether you were an avid / able reader as a child. I had no idea why I found reading so tricky and put an immense amount of pressure on myself to read the ‘right’ books, as I inevitably read so few. I now read much more widely and diversely (c. 95% kids’ books).
I loved how Abi Elphinstone described it when she did Author’s Live as ‘looking at the world sideways’. Such a great prompt for kids’ own imaginations and writing.
It’s certainly taken my till being grown-up to even begin to work it out, so I’m always keen that we as adults do whatever we can to help kids get a head start on that journey.
And all of that helps kids to identify what it is they like about a story. Is it the fantasy elements? The adventure? The journey? The adversity? Etc. etc. All of which hopefully helps them build a sense of what they might like in their next read.

I’m so glad you’ve included Ship of Shadows which is a glorious adventure story and doesn’t get shouted about enough. And I adore Brightstorm too. Here’s a few other options of various descriptions.

It’s taken me a couple of weeks to read as I’ve been struggling with my energy, but I’ve finally finished the brilliant We Are Dragon by @alastairc.com.
A superb conclusion to a fabulous series and I’ve particularly loved Rieka’s part of the story. Though Fillan and Kevin are also just a joy. ❤️
One week left to enter my prize draw to win a signed set of the Skandar books by A. F. Steadman or a signed copy of Nate Yu's Blast from the Past by Maisie Chan. All monies go towards my London Marathon fundraising for BookTrust! Thank you ❤️

Kindness in The Visitor, a lovely intergenerational story of loneliness.
Eric - acts of kindness shown when he leaves.
Every Little Kindness is a visual treat - a wordless book that shows how acts of kindness can be passed.
One House for All is a great lesson in compromise!
Sorry I thought I sent a reply hours ago!
I’m going with the Winnie the Pooh stories. Everyone is accepted for who they are and no one left behind.

I love this book so much. I generally find it too difficult to call anything my favourite, but this is my favourite book of all time. It's so thought-provoking and makes children and adults really think about the power of kindness and understanding. ❤️
Cover of the The Final Year by Matt Goodfellow showing a boy standing on a school playground with angel wings coming out of his back.
Cover of the The Bubble Boy by Stewart Foster with a typeface where the O in Boy is represented by a bubble. There is a boy in a red t-shirt sitting inside the bubble holding up a hand. Underneath the bubble are some stylised buildings and underneath them is a yellow banner stating: "NOT ALL SUPERHEROES WEAR CAPES"
Some fantastic books on kindness already done in #KidsBooksFriday and as usual many of my favourites have gone. A couple of slightly less obvious ones where kindness is still a major part of the story.
The Bubble Boy by Stewart Foster
The Final Year by Matt Goodfellow
Both great books!
