A living tortoise next to a book called Torty and the Soldier and a model tortoise in a museum exhibit.
Never a dull moment at #TePapa! Today I met THE #tortoise #torty from our #galipoli exhibition.
Not planned, I just bumped into her!
This place is something else.
In the latest episode we talk with a #deepsea legend Nigel Merritt. He shares a career that spans whaling, months on a vessel with no common language, and pioneering methods that have shaped how we understand the #deepocean.
Find it in #podcast places.

Last night I was down a rabbit hole of why fish can't exist deeper than around 8000 meters and I realized that the deepest a fish has ever gone in the ocean and survived was in a submersible. The fish were people. All vertebrates are fish.
I hope this helps with ~~the horrors~~
The day before heading out to #Antarctica to look for the #colossalsquid with our low-light/far-red camera, I caught the #IronLungMovie and loved it.
Now I'm in an inhospitable environment looking for monsters in an ocean of blood ๐.

The shapes of #PancakeIce are really satisfying. They remind me of jellyfish, giant waterlilies and some sort of paper sculpture.

It was a very special moment. Most people were asleep so it was just me and felt very personal.
It is eerily smooth, waiting for someone to accuse it of being AI.
It was a very quiet and calm morning.
Eerily peaceful moments at 3am off Ross Island. #antarctica is a magical place of extremes.

A new record for #projectESCA, down to 700 m deep from a Zodiac using a pot-hauler and a battery.
This project is the embodiment of #number8wire.

A small x-bow expedition vessel in port in Otepoti Dunedin, awaiting its next adventure
After an epic weekend of rounding up the final gear for #ProjectESCA season 2, @thomaslinley.com and I join Aurora Expeditions' MV Douglas Mawson today to start our next Antarctic squidchasing adventure!
#ProjectESCA has arrived in Dunedin to make final preparations before we sail out for Antarctica on Monday to go squidchasing. @thomaslinley.com and I are hoping this is a good omen...
The #ProjectESCA team flank a life-sized plush colossal squid on a sofa in a ship lounge. A mysterious cardboard hammerhead shark hat lurks behind
T -5 days to the next voyage! Want to know the story of #ProjectESCA? @thomaslinley.com and I chatted about how we got here on the @deepseapod.com in honor of the colossal squid's 100th birthday www.deepseapod.com/episodes/056...
Flick....flick...flick. They go the extra mile
Art stamp on watercolor: two large squid form a circle surrounding the ESCA camera system logo
Welcome to #ProjectESCA season 2! A week from tomorrow, @thomaslinley.com of the @deepseapod.com & I sail for Antarctica for 5 weeks with Aurora Expeditions, with our deep-sea camera system and a few new toys as well. With a little luck, we'll have some exciting to stories to share; stay tuned!
We covered Cookie Cutter Sharks a few years ago on our show. Amazing creatures! Very cool to see this little guy. Still a #NoThanks to going for a swim with one. strangebynaturepodcast.podbean.com/e/cookie-cut...
Too many cookies over Christmas? Why not use a smaller #cookiecuttershark to cut back?
Adorable little horror.
#anglerfish are so gross and scary!
Oh really, have you seen the babies? They look like a furious peeled grape!

I wondered why I was randomly drawn to this doorway.

4 valentines in a grid, a pelican eel with the words "You make my jaw drop", an anglerfish that says "You're my light in the darkness", a grimalditeuthis that says "I find you a LURE ing" and two octopuses and a snailfish on the skeleton of a whale that says "I've Whale Fallen for you" lmao. The octopuses are making a heart with their arms together.
You ready for our 2026 Valentines??
The art is ready for ya ๐
As with everything on our shop, sales of these valentines support @skypeascientist.bsky.social!
This year's cards were designed by Philly artist @aprilfinfrock.bsky.social! Obsessed with how these turned out.

I had not! @sarahmackattack.bsky.social is such a powerhouse!
Did you catch her on latest episode?
A gem from Andrew's book collection. Giving me nostalgia for Northern Hemisphere fishes... Where cod are cod dammit!
Clearer image from the aquarist.
Conjoined African Rift Valley cichlids at the local aquarium. While one certainly got the short straw, both are alive at 9 days old.
A really nice video by @schmidtocean.bsky.social about our #Antarctic expedition.
It captures some of the emotion of being there and the sense of urgency.
I would not have been able to join if not for the support of @pure-ocean.bsky.social
and #TePapa
