Dear #RNA sky,
I have a question:
For your custom #RNA synthesis sequences (30nt, non modified +HPLC) destined to be used for in-vitro binding assays, which is your go to company?

NEW: for @nytimes.com, I wrote about a new study showing that queen bumblebees can breathe underwater, surviving submerged for a week
the “remarkable” study stems from a lab snafu, when a co-author thought she accidentally drowned several bees—but later found that they were alive 🧪

#apaperaday @keystonesymposia.bsky.social special! Klaus & I made it to Banff for the nucleic acid therapy delivery conference. Today’s pick is from Nucleic Acid Therapeutics (NAT) by Andersson et al: an update on assessing hybridization dependent off target risks for NATs. doi 10.1089/nat.2024.0072

A view of the stairs inside Hintze Hall. The handrail is highly decorated, with carvings of animals. At the top of the stairs, a giant sequoia slice is visible.

Come for the dinosaurs, stay for the architecture! 🤩
We couldn’t resist sharing some more photos taken on a recent stroll around the Museum!
Have you ever noticed these details? ✨
A reminder that humans in cars - notably omitted from this thanks to motonormativity - kill 1.2m people every year
#apaperaday Today's pick is from BMC Neurology by Strober et al on an analysis of caregiver burden for Duchenne muscular dystrophy in 3 different regions (USA, Europe and Japan). Usually these studies focus on only one country. doi: 10.1186/s12883-025-04531-8
Thank you for choosing our figure to illustrate the post! The author is not just a great researcher, but a #raredisease patient herself.

You are right, we will have to do better next year.
#apaperaday with some delay due to train issues this morning. The pick is from @worldmusclesociety.org journal Neuromuscular Disorders, by Ulm Seiwert et al on 3 cases with duplications of dystrophin exons, only one of which associated with dystrophinopathy. DOI: 10.1016/j.nmd.2026.106335
Not all dystrophin duplications will be pathogenic and the analysis tools used generally will not be able to assess where the duplication is located (in tandem or not). Long read sequencing is expensive, but it can provide clarity.
A computer screen shows the RareDiseaseDay web page. In front of it, aa pile of pink, blue, purple and green balloons, glowsticks and paint jars.
When you are a #raredisease researcher and you search your drawers for ideas of what to do this year...
Finger paint? Balloons? Glowsticks? Party poppers?
A week to go...
