Her face and hair cut off some of the text, as do the borders of the panel. The text is block characters with black lines, a white fill, and a white outline. The white outline sits against the black background. Up close, the brush strokes visible in the border of the outline and the background show that it was black drawn over white, not white drawn over black. The same image is presented in English, with the text reading "Oh?". The question mark is re-used from the original text, but moved to a different position. Portions that were not visible were drawn new, and other portions are cut off. The girl and the panel still cut off the text. Finally, the English "Oh?" is displayed by itself over a gray background. Portions of the text are masked away, and there is black scribbling around the white outline around the text to mimic the brush strokes present in the original. Because retouch and English lettering is additive, the white void had to be added under the text outlines and then a black brush used to cover up some of the edges to give the impression of the background being drawn in to surround the text.
Masking is a neat part of lettering. Even when dealing with just black and white, it's important to consider the order that elements were layered on to of each other. The original text was drawn in a white void, and then the black "background" drawn around it. Much more detail in alt text!

As someone who worked on the jp version its about time
It is so incredibly frustrating to buy a volume of manga you helped create only to find your credits not there. I feel like I’m in a constant uphill battle to get publishers to simply add names to credits, and it shouldn’t be this way.
Just credit the people involved! It’s not hard!

I was watching a webinar for Japanese artists interested in working internationally, and came across my own Bluesky feed on a slide as an example of artists trying to reach out to readers outside of Japan😆

joined a BL-themed indie comic event called J-Garden today. March is supposed to be the beginning of spring, and even though it’s an indoor event, it was very cold 🥶 because the shutters of the hall were kept open for ventilation and crowd control. But overall, I really enjoyed this exciting event 💕
the rate I earn for game translation has stayed pretty stagnant from 2016 to now, except the yen has tanked since then, so I actually took about a 30% pay CUT, not even counting inflation and the cost of living...
book/manga rates increase incrementally, but barely keep up with inflation.
