The is what we mean by pollen season, here in the #PacificNorthwest. Red alders have finally finished spewing pollen, but bigleaf maples are in full reproductive mode, and those are big trees!

The Pope is only saying what every other European leader is thinking.
Happy International Dark Sky Week! 🌌
When was the last time you remember standing under a truly dark sky? Have you ever?
The Milky Way has been lost to over a third of humanity. We’ve scrubbed it from the skies with light pollution.

Rural Taiwan. 1972. No streetlights in the village yet, and the brightest bulb indoors was 25 watt. Everybody knew the phase of the moon. At full moon, kids could dance in the street after dinner. Without moonlight, you needed a flashlight to avoid the snakes. The night sky was magical!
Never thought I'd agree with Sarah Palin...
You see, if you threaten the president the FBI knocks on your door, but if the president threatens 90 million people, there’s not a soul in government charged with doing anything apparently.

Is this awesome, or what? Sidewalk art that becomes visible when wet! #PNW #Seattle

if nothing else, there is something to be said for spending time outside in the sun with thousands of people who share your anger at the state of things
No heart , no courage , no brains Case for no kings

One dove on duty. One dove off the clock. 🕊️😴
Same branch, very different priorities.

A cropped but otherwise unedited photo of 2 Mallard ducklings swimming among sparse grass and twigs.
Dear @banditelli.org duckling season has arrived in Portland, OR. #birds
These are, not there are. I wish we could edit our mistakes!
I do love willow catkins, from soft minky gray to floppy yellow. There are Scouler's willow (Salix scouleriana), but so many look alike. Can you spot the bushtit nest in the red-flowering currant? (They're deconstructing last year's in the hemlock for this one. Smart.)

Finally, spring is springing here in #Bellingham WA 🌱
Planted half a dozen tall Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium) and several red-flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum) as 2-gallon shrubs in autumn 2018. Look at them now! Bushtits already nesting in the nearest currant. #nativeplants #PNW #habitat
Unfair, James. It was easy for Jesus to be a nice guy. Because, as Donald Trump would be the first to tell you, no one ever treated Jesus as badly as we have treated Trump.
Yes. People who will bomb an elementary school don't give a shit about what happens to wildlife. #birds #nature #war
Looking down into a beautiful pale purple striped crocus with a golden bottom filled with water like a goblet from the previous night’s rain.
Tons of about to pop crocuses in various shade of stripes purple.
Rainy night, happy crocuses.

Just out @propublica.org: How did the Pentagon make the horrible mistake that left more than 150 school children dead? Perhaps because it cancelled an effort to limit such harm in favor of Hegseth’s lust for “lethality.”

A small fallen tree covered with rough bark extends from the top center to the lower left of the image. Brown pine needles are apparent (though not in focus) in the right third of the image. The image is centered on a male hairy woodpecker sitting on the fallen tree. It's facing the camera but with its head turned to the left. The dark gray beak has white down at its base. The head is black and white, with a small splash of bright red at the back. The head pattern includes a black crown, a broad black stripe extending past the dark eye, and a narrower, less well-defind black stripe extending back from the beak. The visible part of the back is black. The breast and belly are white. The feet are rough and gray -- in fact, they blend in with the rough gray bark of the fallen tree.

I continue to be gobsmacked at 1) how common this formulation is 2) how antisemitic and generally bigoted it is 3) and how for all the talk of anti-semitism this is never cited as an example even though it’s quite literally the original incarnation.
Methinks "molested" is a bit weak here. But he sure is wagging the dog.
Absolutely insane. Light pollution isn't just an impediment to star-gazing, it actually kills, and not just small squirmy species. We are only beginning to understand the full range of night physiology and why we NEED darkness at night. #LAN #darksky @danidarkskies.bsky.social

Out here on west coast in Skagit flats (WA), usually when we've seen them take flight like this, there's a bald eagle around somewhere. Never saw an eagle catch one, but they do seem to be afraid of eagles.
as far as i can tell “bio hacking” is just a goofy term for giving yourself some combination of an eating disorder and a drug addiction
