These values represent anomalies of +5 to +6โฏยฐC above the climatological average for this time of year, with record-breaking warmth in the Balearic Sea. Winter temperatures have also been persistently above the historical, putting marine species and ecosystems at risk.
๐ Exceptionally warm waters in the western #Mediterranean
Sea surface temperatures in the western Mediterranean have exceeded 26โฏยฐC, with localised peaks reaching 28 to 30โฏยฐC.

More research into these interactions is essential to anticipate and mitigate compounding #ClimateRisks.

Recent studies raise a critical concern: tipping element interactions may lead to tipping cascades, where the collapse of one system accelerates failures in others. For instance, a collapsed AMOC could both dry the Amazon and speed up Greenland Ice Sheet melting.
Once triggered, these shifts can cause abrupt and irreversible changes, with severe impacts on ecosystems and human societies.
While research has advanced our understanding of individual events, their interactionsโand the potential for one tipping event to trigger othersโremain poorly understood.
๐ What do you know about climate tipping points?
Climate tipping elements are major #Earth subsystemsโsuch as the Greenland Ice Sheet, the AMOC, permafrost, monsoon systems, and the Amazon rainforestโthat could cross critical thresholds due to #GlobalWarming.

๐ Why It Matters
Coral reefs support 25% of all marine species and sustain the livelihoods of 1 billion people through fisheries, tourism, and coastal protection. As reefs turn ghostly white and die, we face cascading losses in biodiversity, food security, and coastal resilience.
Iconic ecosystems like Australiaโs Great Barrier Reef and Indonesiaโs Raja Ampat, once considered thermal refuges, are now bleaching alongside even the remotest atolls of the Chagos Islands.

Since January 2023, over 83% of the planetโs #CoralReefs have experienced #HeatStress severe enough to bleach themโthe most extensive event on record.
๐ From global portfolios to specific renewable energy sites, our climate projections and tailored risk reports support science-based decisions that align with sustainability reporting frameworks.

However, it does contribute to the long-term trend of declining ice cover in the Arctic. โ

Additionally, the reduction in sea ice impacts #wildlife, particularly polar bears that rely on the ice to hunt.
It's important to note that a record-low winter maximum does not necessarily predict a record-low summer minimum in September.
The Arctic is warming x4 faster than the rest of the world, affecting #weather patterns by altering atmospheric pressure and temperature differences, which can weaken the jet stream and influence storm behavior.
This year's maximum extent is approximately 1.31 million kmยฒ below the 1981 to 2010 average and 80,000 kmยฒ less than the previous record low set in 2017. The diminishing sea #ice has significant global implications.
