The relational aspect you raise makes me think about the role of power in victorious moments as well. For some reason I often associate victory with an "underdog" narrative, but watching students play games IRL, I've observed them as spaces where power is negotiated, and in complex ways #literacies

In our case, the very definition of victory has evolved, based on what every gamer that has entered our project brings to the table. So, just bring it to the Round Table and let your Knights decide with you! #literacies

Q3: In my experiences researching online communities, language, access, and power are always in some way mediating the literate activities taking place (e.g., digital writers drafting in different languages to reach different audiences). As #literacies researchers, it's our job to follow that.

Spoiler alert for Dr. Berry’s upcoming book, but brilliant and enticing point to ponder. We’re excited to learn more! #literacies #victory

A3. I love how Raúl and his team are working to center languages and linguistic repertoires beyond the primacy of English in gaming spaces. It’s important to interrogate how English is reified through the private, monetized corporate infrastructure of popular gaming! #literacies

A2. I’m interested in how asymmetric games - games in which players have different roles, objectives, and mechanics (i.e., Netrunner, MtG, Root) - might illuminate ways that people can compose together in community through processes that are both unique AND congruent. #literacies

A1: Over the last few years, I have been working to intentionally reframe "victory" as focusing on being present in the moment as opposed to being fully focused on just trying to 'achieve' the next new thing, step, etc. #literacies

A1. I think about how “victory” can signify many different things depending on the context. Victory can suggest a binary between winners/losers in competitive gaming. I’m curious how cooperative gaming methods might help redefine how “victory” can look in learning environments. #literacies

Hey, #literacies community! I’m Kyle Smith, a Ph.D. candidate in Educational Studies at the University of Michigan. I'll be monitoring tonight's chat.
I've been a fan of board games since my Candy Land days as a kid. Lately, my evenings are often spent playing multiplayer video games w/ my husband.

Hi! My name is Clara Abbott (she/her) and I am a 3rd year doctoral candidate in Literacy Studies at Penn GSE. I have never identified as a gamer per se, but have fond memories designing Wii characters (Mii, right?) and playing hours of Mariocart as a kid, so excited for this #literacies chat!

Hey #literacies chat! I’m Alex Corbitt, assistant professor of literacy education at Syracuse University. Shoutout to Kyle Smith for facilitating tonight!

I’m late to the game (pun intended), but I’m 2/3rds of the way through Baldur’s Gate 3! It takes me back to when I played 1 and 2 as a kid!

A5: Would love to see a #literacies chat that takes up (and returns us to) the topic of critical #literacies! How do we understand its communicative capacity to respond to this moment, its utility in naming injustice, and its promise in building more just social futures!

A4: I'd like to see the #literacies chat expand beyond our once a month conversations. Our team really enjoys putting the chats together, and it would be great to find ways to sustain the momentum generated within these conversations.

New publication 🎉🎉. In this piece, I explore how six teenage boys coauthored imaginative worlds together through RPG play. In particular, I examine innovative moments of “liminal play” when the game, rules, and real-world blurred together. Read more here: www.researchgate.net/publication/...
