Been interested in John Gwynne for a while so decided to read this, first 20% is really cool and it managed to get me invested in the 3 lead characters very quick. I’m a sucker for anything based in Norse Mythos so something as rich with that as this and prose this pretty gripped me immediately

Posted rough thoughts in the quotes. Definitely not without its flaws and some of Sandersons weakest writing at times but he managed to conclude things satisfyingly and hit home on most moments that mattered. I had fun

do worry for the future though, especially seeing how hectic his future release schedule is, I really think some time is needed to work on the flaws here because it feels like an enormous step back. Even more frustrating because you sometimes see the potential, then it’s gone. All in all, I had fun

I think he really hit home with some of the core themes about choice, free will and utilitarianism but fell flat with others.

It’s more of what I expected post OB and RoW, quality varying in some areas but overall more enjoyable. I got what I wanted from this, like I said Sanderson is unparalleled at delivering big moments and finding the right resolutions, I’m happy where things have left off.

His prose has always been where he falls flat the hardest but never something that’s stood out to me but it’s pretty obvious here. Coupled with the mental health theme exploration here being its lowest :/ no subtlety or nuance and no respect for the audience

For what it’s worth I enjoyed this book but his weaknesses are more blatant than they’ve ever been, this is his lowest as a writer on the micro level. On the macro he’s always gonna deliver, big AAA blockbuster type stuff is his bag but man.

52% in things are starting to pick up, enjoyed day 5 a lot. Sanderson’s constant spoon feeding gets a little jarring at times but whatever, I’m ready for this last 50% I have so many questions
