I'm guessing Anderson got creative with that story element, Red shoes = desire/sin and made it the cause. Just a speculation, dont know for sure.

Ah, I flubbed the story lineage a bit:

1518 Dancing Plague >> Hans Christian Anderson's "The Red Shoes" (1845) >> "The Red Shoes" (1948)

"The Red Shoes" arise from the Church's cure, which was to have the dancers wear red shoes and pray for healing, which actually yielded some results.

I was listening to a podcast about this and one of the hosts observed it sounded more like convulsions than rhythmic dancing. It would be interesting to read a more detailed account.

Also, did they not have sedatives at the time? Wouldn't that have been everyone's first thought, sleep it off?

I should include the name of the pod, "Weird History".

If its a scifi or comedy movie from the 50s, ten to one it features a guy in an ape suit. They couldn't get enough of people dressed as apes.

I heard the Buffy episode "Once More With Disco" referenced today on a podcast. They based the episode on the 1518 Dancing Plague of Strasbourg.
