In short, I'm more likely to believe an unknown, marginalized person who has little to gain socially, or who is being as quiet about the situation as possible, over someone powerful, loudly protesting, unapologetic, with a cult following and a destructive presence in society.

3. Do the people who like them have realistic or idealized opinions about them?
4. Who is being louder about being hurt? What are their stated motivations?
5. What are the unstated motivations? Will anyone really personally benefit here?...

I've recently been asked how I judge who to believe in situations like this, especially when I don't know one or both parties. So, a summary.
1. Who has more power in the situation? I trust them less to start.
2. What is the history of each party? Do they have any markers of mistreating others?...
