Opportunity brought me by the American Civil War battlefield of Fredericksburg today, so I spent a couple of hours visiting with the Mrs.

Pictured is the monument to the 7th Michigan, and behind it is where the 7th and other Union units crossed the Rappahannock River under Rebel fire. The Battle of Fredericksburg featured an urban battle in its beginning, which was rare in the Civil War.

Photo shows Phil Watson holding up a copy of the British Army's Field Service Regulations as podcast host Mike Cunha listens on.

Phil asks the listeners:

1. Regarding the "chateau generals," why were chateaus the place for generals?

2. Regarding the idea of mission command and decentralized leadership, were some BEF officers not used to using initiative?

Email Phil directly at lancerwatson@live.co.uk with your ideas!

Photo shows the silhouette of a burning St. Chamond tank at the end of the road, in the distance, and the Poilus are huddling against the embankment. The Poilus look tense, and several are pressing themselves against the embankment. One is looking at the cameraman, and close ups reveal a mustached man.

Read Hildinger’s “Warriors of the Steppe” maybe 15 years ago, and have long had a fascination with Central Asia and the Mongols.

A deep dive into an old world awaits. Thank you so very much!

110 years ago, Émile Driant and thousands of others were killed in the opening days of Verdun.

To mark the anniversary, I’ve reworked my short film on the battle, told in 5 minutes.
