Monochrome macro of clustered mushrooms on damp wood, focusing on the underside of one cap. The ridged gills radiate outward in sharp detail, framed by softly curved stems and an out-of-focus forest floor.

Those gills get me every time 😍

A cluster of pale cream-colored crown-tipped coral mushrooms growing from dark forest floor debris. The fungi have elongated tubular stems that branch upward, with flared, crown-like tips. The mushrooms appear translucent and delicate against a blurred background of green moss and brown decomposing wood.

Coral fungi always seem like they wandered in from another world, more at home beneath the waves than among the moss. This one stood out against the dark bark. I love finding details like this tucked away on the forest floor.

A close-up of a small orange-brown polypore mushroom growing from a dark, weathered log. Its underside shows a dense network of pale pores instead of gills, and the soft background keeps the focus on the delicate texture and stem.

I don't know about you, but I'm a sucker for polypores. The intricate detail on the underside is mesmerizing.

A hand extends toward a striking orange and red amanita mushroom with distinctive white spots across its cap, found growing on the forest floor among green pine needles, dried grasses, and scattered fall leaves.

There’s just something magnetic about an Amanita mushroom. The color pulls you in, the pattern makes you pause, and before you realize it, you’re laying in the wet leaves trying to get a closer look. 😍 🍄

Thanks! You are probably right. I haven’t paid as much attention to identification for these as I should.

Everything behind it dissolves into green and brown. The forest becomes background. This is what mushrooms do when they fruit. They pull focus. They say: Hey, look at this exact spot where death becomes something else. Then they're gone and the forest takes back the frame.

Delicate white mushroom with pale cream cap rising from bright green moss. The curved stem supports the cap at a slight angle, revealing thin parallel gills underneath. Soft forest light illuminates the mushroom against a blurred green background of moss and foliage.

The moss was almost artificial green the after rain. That's what I noticed first. Then I saw this tiny mushroom. The gills always get me. Those thin repeating lines, precise as architecture. This one emerged in the last day or two. The stem still finding its angle. Worth kneeling in the wet leaves.

Three golden-yellow mushrooms with dusty, granulated caps emerge from bright green moss on a forest floor. The largest mushroom in the foreground displays smooth yellow-orange gills beneath a cap covered in fine white-to-tan granules. Two smaller specimens stand behind, their warm amber caps transitioning to deeper rust tones at the edges against a soft, dark background.

These grew on a log I've walked past twenty times this month. The orange color looks painted on, almost artificial against the moss. But touch them and they're solid, real, cool to the fingertips. The forest floor is full of surprises.

Myth: Fresh mushrooms are always better.

Reality: Dried mushrooms aren't lesser versions of fresh. Drying concentrates flavor. Dried porcini have more umami than fresh. Dried shiitake develop beneficial compounds during dehydration. The process transforms rather than diminishes. #mushrooms #cooking

Dehydration holds that specificity. So does fat. Cook them down in butter or oil until they surrender all their water, pack them dense, freeze them flat. Later, mid-February, you'll open that bag and October returns. Not despite preservation. Because of it. Place and time, captured in mushroom form.

People ask why bother preserving mushrooms when you can buy them year-round. They don't understand. These aren't just mushrooms. They're October in the woods, fog lifting, that particular spot under the oak where they appear every year. They're the walk there. The search. The finding. (1/2)

Watching Things Rot: Mushrooms and Decomposition | Wandering Spore Three years of watching a single log rot reveals the patient work of fungal decomposition. Explore the mushroom life cycle, wood decay processes, and how to store fresh mushrooms to keep them longer.

I've been watching the same fallen oak for three years. This year, I can push my thumb through the wood. Thread by thread, the mycelium is turning the tree into soil. New post on decomposition, life cycles, and what happens when you stop looking away.

Maitake (Hen of the Woods) at oak bases: looks like a flower explosion. Lion's Mane on dying hardwoods: can't mistake those white icicle teeth. Honey Mushrooms clustering on stumps. But seriously, Maitake season is maybe 2-3 weeks in most places. Don't sleep on it.

Mushrooms are everywhere, but most people don't know much beyond "they taste earthy" or that you find them in the woods. I want to educate by making mushrooms easy to understand and enjoyable to read about: Cultivation, foraging, cooking, and science. All approachable. All useful.

Every week, I cover whatever part of the mushroom world feels worth exploring in the newsletter. How to cook hen of the woods so it's crispy. The difference between home-grown shiitake and store-bought. New research on lion's mane that doesn't sound like a supplement ad. Whatever sounds interesting.

Welcome to Wandering Spore. I'm a chef, photographer, and writer who has spent years working with mushrooms in kitchens before getting curious about where they come from. That led to obsession: growing, foraging, and understanding how they work. This is where I share all of that. ↓ (1/4)
