I've loved @forbesmasson.bsky.social and @alancumming.bsky.social since their Victor and Barry days. So much so, that me and my pal, Rebecca, used to perform their songs at after show parties.

Here's us in 1995 and 1999 (I can't explain the bowler hats, but I do love a good suit)

Burnaby Heritage Village is the old timey street in the moving photo. And the big hill that Bill rides his bike down at the end is in New West. In fact, New West is most of 1950s Derry.

When I moved here, I loved spotting IT (and X Files) locations!

With printed media, you can just store it in a warehouse. When some company says "we never said that," you can go to the archives, fetch a newspaper, and that ends the argument. When the companies on their websites change stories, there is no archive outside the Internet Archive.

This was written about a different discipline but the lesson is the same - it's the prefect explanation of why we should NEVER use LLMs in family history research.

"Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the place where the problem lives..."

Get your hands dirty!

Vancouver Centennial Plaque #68 – CPR Tunnel In 1932, to relieve traffic disruption in the city core, the C.P.R. built a tunnel to connect its False Creek yards with its Burrard Inlet terminal and wharves. Part of it is now used by the SkyTrain.

And probably the only mall with a 1986 centennial plaque attached!

(There were other plaques planned for a different downtown mall, but they refused to install them)

In 1986, 100 plaques were installed to celebrate Vancouver’s centennial.

Trawling through the archives, searching old newspapers, time travelling on StreetView, driving all over the city… I’ve found 40 of them.

Just in time for their 40th anniversary!

Filming locations in Port Coquitlam One of the things I love about living in the greater Vancouver area is all the filming that takes place here. And Port Coquitlam is no exception! This page shows some of the filming locations in our lovely city.

But that’s not the only filming Port Coquitlam has seen! Yellowjackets was the most recent, but I’ve found productions all the way back to 1976, including the X-Files (of course) and tons of Supernatural.

If you want to visit, I’ve made a Google Map - randomlygenerated.ca/blogs/port-c...

Delighted to see PoCoHeritage included in the Netflix In Your Neighbourhood map for Port Coquitlam! Virgin River used In A Wink Salon as a filming location, so Netflix Canada built a little itinerary around visiting it.

Aber-bloody-deen? References to Aberdeen in British TV comedies (mostly) Another niche tangent! In British comedy series, all crappy, far away towns are Aberdeen and I'm collecting all the references I can find.

This is something I've wanted to pull together for a while.
