The NC Supreme Court's Leandro decision is going to make a terrible problem even worse. The fix now has to come from our state lawmakers. Contact them and urge them to better fund our public schools! #nced #ncpublicschools #ncga #ncpol
“This isn’t the end,” Jenice Ramirez... ‘This is a time to build a stronger movement, to build power, to put even more pressure on our state legislators, state leaders, our governor and our state superintendent of public schools.” #ncpol

Jackie McLean, a dropout prevention specialist in Hoke County Schools — one of the original plaintiff districts in the Leandro case — said advocates remain committed to pressing for students’ constitutional rights.
“We will not let up. I will not let up,” McLean said.

The Republican-dominated state Supreme Court just threw out the Leandro case.
It is a devastating blow for public education advocates. Here's why. 👇

Despite last week's corrupt state supreme court ruling, the Leandro Plan remains the only evidence-based plan to provide all students with the schools they're owed

Justice delayed is justice denied. And our children have already waited long enough. Please read our statement on today's shameful Leandro ruling

North Carolinians deserve to know whether Phil Berger's replacement will support funding the Leandro Plan, or whether they will continue to adopt his radical view that the General Assembly can ignore the parts of the state constitution they don't like.

Kudos to @triangleblogblog.bsky.social for explaining to their readers that the budget challenges faced in Chapel Hill-Carrboro are due to the failure of *state* legislators' unwillingness to fund the Leandro Plan.
Other #ncpol journalists, please take note!
The solutions to every challenge mentioned in this article can be found in the Leandro Plan. The Plan that legislators are under a court order to fund. Why not mention that to your readers?
A reminder that the budget challenges faced by Cumberland County (and every other school district across the state) are a direct result of the General Assembly's decision to give tax cuts to corporations instead of funding the Leandro Plan
#ncpol #LeadWithLeandro
It seems wild to not mention that these cuts would be unnecessary if lawakers simply did their job and funded the Leandro Plan. Why is that context unimportant, @keunghui.bsky.social?

Our students deserve lawmakers who will fight for their constitutional rights. Sadly, such lawmakers are few and far between.

We continue to try and remind the Governor and his staff that constitutional rights are not contingent on existing revenue structures
Under Leandro, the state was supposed to pass a $2bn school bond to help counties with their capital needs. Again, it's unclear why the author denies their readers this important context that explains why these problems exist.

"the waitlist for subsidized care is seven times bigger than in mid-2024, increasing from 2,164 children in July 2024 to 15,512 in December 2025"
Under Leandro, the state was supposed to provide funding to eliminate the child care subsidy waitlist. Seems like something worth mentioning 🤷♀️

What could be more critical than meeting our children's needs @ncgovernor.bsky.social?
#ncpol #LeadWithLeandro
The Every Child NC coalition must express our disappointment that – once again – Governor Stein has produced a budget proposal that fails to include full funding for the Leandro Plan. Governor Stein’s so-called “critical-needs budget” fails to include funding for the Leandro Plan. But what could be more critical than the ongoing crisis facing North Carolina’s 1.5 million public school students? At every point since the Leandro case was filed 32 years ago, the courts have found that state leaders are failing to provide all students with access to decent schools, as our state constitution promises. The Leandro Plan remains the only viable, research-based plan to remedy this ongoing injustice and to finally meet our legal and moral obligation to students. State leaders have decided that they would rather fund tax cuts for corporations and wealthy North Carolinians instead of providing public school students with the school resources they’re owed. North Carolina’s students will continue to find themselves at the losing end of this trade-off until state leaders show the courage to do what’s right by putting students ahead of the donor class. Governor Stein’s “critical-needs budget” fails to demonstrate such courage. For the sake of our students, we hope that his upcoming budget proposals will offer a new path forward that values the futures of our children.
What could be more critical than fulfilling NC students' constitutional rights to decent schools? Yet somehow this glaring need failed to make @ncgovernor.bsky.social's Critical Needs Budget.

Thank you to the Daily Tar Heel for highlighting our students' continued wait for the state to provide them with the decent schools they are owed

Reminder that the Leandro Plan would create a network of 800 community schools across the state. Almost 1/3 of all NC schools would be included
#ncpol #LeadWithLeandro
It would be great if this story (and the speakers at the State of Child Care in NC roundtable) mentioned that the Leandro Plan calls for eliminating the Child Care Subsidy waitlist and ensuring a NC Pre-K seat for all eligible 4-year-olds
#ncpol #LeadWithLeandro
It would be great if the article mentioned that this is a drop in the bucket relative to schools' massive shortfall of mental health support staff, as documented in the Leandro case

Thank you to WFAE's James Farrell for highlighting our students' continued wait for a resolution in the Leandro case
