North Carolinians deserve to know whether Phil Berger's replacement will support funding the Leandro Plan, or whether they will continue to adopt his radical view that the General Assembly can ignore the parts of the state constitution they don't like.

Lawmakers Question Cumberland School Leaders About Closings, Funding State lawmakers questioned Cumberland County school district leaders about school closings, funding gaps, and teacher retention on Friday.

A reminder that the budget challenges faced by Cumberland County (and every other school district across the state) are a direct result of the General Assembly's decision to give tax cuts to corporations instead of funding the Leandro Plan

Wake schools will make more budget cuts. Here’s why it says they’re needed. The superintendent wants to ask commissioners for an increase of around $25 million. But he says that won’t meet all the needs.

It seems wild to not mention that these cuts would be unnecessary if lawakers simply did their job and funded the Leandro Plan. Why is that context unimportant, @keunghui.bsky.social?

Our students deserve lawmakers who will fight for their constitutional rights. Sadly, such lawmakers are few and far between.

It would be great if this story (and the speakers at the State of Child Care in NC roundtable) mentioned that the Leandro Plan calls for eliminating the Child Care Subsidy waitlist and ensuring a NC Pre-K seat for all eligible 4-year-olds

It would be great if the article mentioned that this is a drop in the bucket relative to schools' massive shortfall of mental health support staff, as documented in the Leandro case

It is extremely discouraging that the State Superintendent and the State Board of Education aren't making full implementation of the Leandro Plan the centerpiece of their legislative agenda (as they are rquired to do by an open court order)

Via Keung Hui in the N&O's Under the Dome newsletter:

"In 2022, the Supreme Court’s Democratic majority at the time upheld a lower court’s ruling that could lead to hundreds of millions of state dollars being transferred to support public schools. Republicans gained the court majority in the 2022 election and proceeded to block the money transfer and grant a request from GOP legislative leaders to rehear the case.

GOP lawmakers, including Senate leader Phil Berger, maintain that the state constitution allows only the General Assembly to spend state dollars."

Journalists should explain the implications of Berger's radical view: it means that only the General Assembly gets to decide what is and what isn't constitutional. That's clearly not how our democracy was ever intended to function.

Important context: State lawmakers owe Cumberland Co Schools approximately $17.8m for students with disabilities. The county is having to divert money from other important priorities because legislators won't do their jobs, and it's kids who continue to pay the price.
