As more war headlines fill our feeds-more missiles launched, more innocent lives lost-I keep returning to the words of Oregon's own Senator Mark O. Hatfield: "We stand by as children starve by the millions because we lack the will to develop a system to feed them. Yet we can create missiles which find the eye of a needle from thousands of miles away." Decades later, his words still ring true. We have the resources. We have the technology. What's often missing is the collective resolve to prioritize humanitarian needs alongside security interests. We must remain cautious about accepting war as inevitable-especially when so many around the world still face hunger and hardship. Peace is not only necessary; it is still within reach.
